8th grade SS Lab - Training in Pictures

Like the Olympics, the Hunger Games are quickly approaching.  As the tributes prepare, their coaches could take some advice from Olympians.

Click on the following slide show (http://www.forbes.com/2008/07/08/training-perfect-athlete-olympics08-forbeslife-cx_avd_0708health_slide_2.html?thisSpeed=undefined), view the pictures and read the captions.  Then, return to the blog and respond to the following questions:

1.  What kind of "time" do you think Katniss and Peeta have "put in" in preparation to the Games?
2.  How have the Career Tributes made training a full-time job?
3.  How has Haymitch "planned it out" for Katniss and Peeta?
4.  What kind of "pain" has Katniss "put up with?"
5.  What kind of "constant feedback" would you give to a tribute during training?
6.  What kind of fuel would you recommend to the tributes to "pump up the calories?"
7.  In your opinion, what do you think tributes see beyond the Hunger Games?  (In other words, what comes after success?)

  1. 1.Katniss has been hunting for food with a bow and a knife for a long time. And Peeta can wrestle.
2.Because that's what they do everyday all day since they were chosen.
3.They have to stand next to each other all of the time that they are out in public.
4.Her dad passing away when she was little and seeing her mom and family starve.
    5.Always give them positive stuff.
6.To eat animals or food as much as they can and drink a lot.
7.I think that they see living and getting more food so they don't starve to death.

  2. 1. What kind of "time" do you think Katniss and Peeta have "put in" in preparation to the Games?
I think Katniss and Peeta have thought about the games their whole life, but weren't allowed to train. They probably train everyday all day leading up to the Games.
    2. How have the Career Tributes made training a full-time job?
The Tributes have made it a full time job because they don't go to school, see there family, or carry on with their everyday lives, training is all that they do.
    3. How has Haymitch "planned it out" for Katniss and Peeta?
Haymitch told Peeta and Katniss to hid the things they are best at, like arching, for the private training.
    4. What kind of "pain" has Katniss "put up with?"
Katniss has put up with the pain of missing her family and worrying about losing because she thinks the other Tributes are stronger than her.
    5. What kind of "constant feedback" would you give to a tribute during training?
To never under estimate themselves and always use what they are best at to defeat the other Tributes.
    6. What kind of fuel would you recommend to the tributes to "pump up the calories?"
To eat lots of healthy foods so they could regain energy.
    7. In your opinion, what do you think tributes see beyond the Hunger Games? (In other words, what comes after success?)
I think all the Tributes want is to win and surrive the Hunger Games. After they do that I think they would want to go home and start their normal lives again.

  3. 1. The time that Katniss and Peeta put forward to the games is almost exclusive to the time they have been in the capitol. Although Katniss has much more experience in hunting and evasion, she has not had any real training.

    2. The career tributes have mad training their job in essence by training and getting better while the rest of the population is trying to survive and work. They have also trained for the games mentally by knowing how to act and what to do every second people are around.

    3. Haymitch has planned it out for the pair by making sure they appear like brother and sister per say. He trains them together, feeds them together, and openly discusses talents with the both of them. His plan for the games though is not to show off until private training and stick together at all times.

    4. The pain that Katniss has had to put up with the redheaded Avox that she could have saved in the woods with Gale while they were hunting. She has also had to deal with the pain of her fathers death and the "leaving" of her mother from her mental state of mind.

    5. The constant feedback I would give the tributes would be how well there technique is on many things including strength, throwing a spear, etc. I would also give them feedback on how other tributes are doing compared to themselves.

    6. The kind of "fuel" I would give the tributes would be yes lots of food but I would also give them lots of psychological "food" as well. I would constantly remind them that they are the best at what they do and that many of the tributes talk of there skills often.

    7. I think the tributes see after the hunger games is a life of ease and vacation although that may be a false hope. I think that the career tributes will see a life of pride because of the effort and time they put into training for the games. But the poor ones I don't think can see a way out of the state of which they preside and many will go back to work and provide for their family.

  4. 1. Katniss and Peeta have put a lot of time and effort into the games because they are literally fighting for their lives.
    2. Training is a full time job because you always have to watch what you do. Weather it's eating or sleeping you have to be very balanced and prepared.
    3. Haymitch wants Katniss and Peeta to stick together and create a special bond between each other.
    4. Katniss has put up with the pain of leaving her mother and sister as well as her friends. She is going through the pain of difficult training and a non stop schedule.
    5. I would tell a Tribute to never give up and always give it your all. If you put your mind toward something and think of the people and your loved ones that will be proud of you, it's all worth it.
    6. I would tell a Tribute to drink lots of gatorade and water. Not all you eat needs to be junk food, keep it healthy so you can compete even better.
    7. I think Tributes see a real respect from the community and the watchers of the games. I think you grab the attention of people and just like the Olympic games you are a hero to someone and you become pretty famous.

  5. 1.alot, maybe like 3 times a day up to 1 week they train as much as that.
    2. getting alot of rest, practicing alot, and only getting so many chances to eat and then you have to go back and get ready for the next swim etc.
    3. only getting so many hours of sleep, eat and practice.
    4. braking bones anything that has to do with work like, muscle pain and putting up with all the pain that is happening to you when you work so hard.
    5. get alot of sleep up to 10 hours of sleep and then at least a 90 min. nap because when you sleep your muscles are building up and its helping you gain more.
    6. alot of food, like, Mcdonalds, any fast food places that not too much fast food because you don't want to get sick or anything while you are working. you don't want to be swimming and get a stomach ache. just places where you would got to get alot of calories in your body.
    7. family, life, just you in general because you should always have time for yourself because it is good to have that. have a family get a job that you get money for, something that you enjoy doing, don't worry about having to get so much to practice or anything like that, have your own life and in your own way.

  6. 1. I don't think they put any time into preparing for the games.
    2. Because that's what they do for a living and they train the tributes for every Hunger Game.
    3. They didn't plan anything out Katniss and Peeta were chosen.
    4. leaving her family, friends, and just the fact knowing she has to kill people in order to win.
    5. "remember its for your life. It will make it better, its all worth it."
    6. protein in their diets, eating more carbs also.
    7. Giving them and their family a better life, getting food and much needed supplies to survive, also having the honor to say that you won the Hunger Games.

  7. 1. What kind of "time" do you think Katniss and Peeta have "put in" in preparation to the Games?
probably a mass amount of time to shape their skills and master them.also time for sleeping and other tasks that they do throughout the day.

    2. How have the Career Tributes made training a full-time job?
because their at this training place everyday and probably don't come home much but in the end it pays off for them.

    3. How has Haymitch "planned it out" for Katniss and Peeta? he sets up schedules for the day and discusses skills that they need to work on also he has done this also so he knows what to do.

    4. What kind of "pain" has Katniss "put up with?"
probably like stress from all the pressure to win the contest also working out pains that need to be solved by sleeping.

    5. What kind of "constant feedback" would you give to a tribute during training? like how well they know skills and how well their holding up.

    6. What kind of fuel would you recommend to the tributes to "pump up the calories?" like at their dinners to eat more of calorie rich foods.

    7. In your opinion, what do you think tributes see beyond the Hunger Games? (In other words, what comes after success?) their survival and coming home also for some to practice for just in case they have to come back to the hunger games.

  8. 1. What kind of "time" do you think Katniss and Peeta have "put in" in preparation to the Games?they must put in a lot time to be prepared to be ready.

    2. How have the Career Tributes made training a full-time job?by studying what they need to know and encourage they self to keep going and to be better at training.

    3. How has Haymitch "planned it out" for Katniss and Peeta?plan it out as in take it time by time organize what your gonna do for each day or seesion.

    4. What kind of "pain" has Katniss "put up with?"like getting injured during a game or work out and any type of injury.

    5. What kind of "constant feedback" would you give to a tribute during training?like thanks for the help you did great helping me out and others keep it up.

    6. What kind of fuel would you recommend to the tributes to "pump up the calories?" pump up the calories so you can wear it off when your playing and after success just celebrate your victory with your team.

    7. In your opinion, what do you think tributes see beyond the Hunger Games? (In other words, what comes after success?)after success comes your reward and then just celebrate it.

  9. 1. Well so far they have put in everyday since they had to start training.
    2. They train everyday up to the games.
    3. They have to stay together and they have to try not to show off what they are good at.
    4. Katniss has put up with mental pain with her father getting blown up and having dreams about it every night.
    5. What feedback I would give is what their doing right and wrong.
    6. Lots and lots of food.
    7. After success I think people will pretty much worship them for getting stuff for the district. And they wont be starving so bad.

  10. 1. I think Katniss and Peeta probably trained very hard in the days leading up to the Games, but they didn't do to much because they need to keep their strength and energy.
    2. The Career Tributes have made training a full-time job because, just like Olympic athletes, they probably trained every day like it was their job to get strong enough to one day win the Games.
    3. Haymitch has sort of planned that Peeta and Katniss should try hard during their training days, but not show the other tributes everything they can do. He wants them to sort of be underestimated until they get judged or until the Games begin.
    4. Katniss has to put up with the pain of trying to learn all of the skills she previously wasn't good at. She had to work very hard no matter how much it hurt.
    5. During training, I would give a tribute all of the honest feedback that they need. You don't want to tell them that they are doing everything perfect because then they would get to confident. You really just need to tell them what they are good at and what they need to work harder on.
    6. For the tributes to pump up the calories I would recommend that they eat a lot, but that they eat healthy so they can keep a good metabolism and have lots of energy to try and work their hardest.
    7. Beyond the Hunger Games, the tributes probably see an easy life where everything they want is given to them and they don't have to work to hard at anything.

  11. 1. What kind of "time" do you think Katniss and Peeta have "put in" in preparation to the Games?
I think they have put as much time that they can into the games.
    2. How have the Career Tributes made training a full-time job?
They have made it a full time job by training to make sure that they are ready for when they go to the games.
    3. How has Haymitch "planned it out" for Katniss and Peeta?
Hey has planned it out by working with them and fixing there strenghs and weaknesses.
    4. What kind of "pain" has Katniss "put up with?"
She has put up with the pain of missing her family and seeing the girl that she saw in the woods.
    5. What kind of "constant feedback" would you give to a tribute during training?
how there doing with working on there weaknesses and to help them if they don't understand it then u can give them feedback on how to do it right.
    6. What kind of fuel would you recommend to the tributes to "pump up the calories?"
I would recommend game like deer and fruits veggies.
    7. In your opinion, what do you think tributes see beyond the Hunger Games? (In other words, what comes after success?)
The thing that comes after success is probly the stafaction of winning the games.

  12. 1. I think Katniss and Peeta have to put in a lot of time just like the Olympic athletes but not four to eight years of it.

    2. The Career Tributes have made training a full-time job because they don't do many other things besides train all day long.

    3. Haymitch has planned it out for Peeta and Katniss because he has arranged all of their training sessions and how they will do everything.

    4. Katniss has been through pain like losing her father in a mining accident, and leaving her family to join the games.

    5. The constant feedback that I would give back to a tribute would be not to give up or you will most likely die.

    6. The kind of fuel I would give the tributes to keep them up would be high in calories, because when you work out you loose a lot of calories, so you would need to replace those calories in your diet. I would also give them sleep to rebuild their muscles to make them stronger.

    7. If the tribute comes out alive, I imagine they would be famous in his/her community, but would be disliked in the other communities.

  13. 1. Not that much time because you probly dont think about it every day and if you dont have much food then you dont have much energy so you wouldnt waste the energy you got.

    2. They have made it a full time job by training every day sense they were 12 and so they have most likely have personal trainers around them at all times helping them.

    3. He has planned it out by making them look like friends by haveing them hold hands and being right by each other at all times.

    4. Katniss has put up with the pain of haveing her father die and seeing her mom shut down. She most likely had to grow up fast and become the head of the house. that probly caused her to be so serious all the time.

    5. You would have to give them honest feedback and you would correct them on all there mistakes. Because if you dont then when they get out there they dont know what to do or do it wrong and that might get them killed.

    6. I would recommend meaty foods so they get a lot of protein and gain some weight. Then when they go out there they will have some extra pounds on them and wont starve as fast. i would also tell them to stay away from the sweats so they dont get sick.

    7. What comes after success matters from what district you from and how you were raised. If you were a career then you would have every thing you wanted. money fame and the respect from everyone in your district. But if you were from a different one you might like what you got for awhile but then the fact that you killed so many people might come back to haunt you and you might end up misserible and drunk like haymitch

  14. 1. I think they have put in a good amount of time getting ready prepared for the difficulties of finding food, hiding, and surviving. But they need to put more time into fighting skills so they can defend themselves against the other Tributes.

    2. Career Tributes made it a full time job by learning how to use deadly weapons, fighting skills, and strength. They have been training for years just so they can be in the Hunger Games and most likely win.

    3. Haymitch planned for Katniss and Peeta to try and pick up some skills to help them survive in the wild. Haymitch also told them to save their best skills for the private session rather than show the others what you can do.

    4. She has put up with the pain of being favored more than Peeta even though he is the reason she is still alive.

    5. I would tell them to try harder to remember the important things and to never show off because that gives away your best skill so the others can avoid that kind of situation. Another thing i would tell them is to try and learn as many survival skills as possible because that is what they are going to need the most.

    6. I would have them eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and meats because they are healthy and have many of the things they need for energy.

    7. I think they are put back at their district or put into a special district for the winners of the Hunger Games only. Possibly they could be put into a more wealthy district with more of the main people in the city live.

  15. 1. I think Peeta and Katniss have put a good amount of time into it because they know a lot of the skills such as hunting.
    2. They made it a full time job by training, and training, and training so they can win.
    3. He made them go together because they work good together and they are probably stronger as one instead of fighting against each other.
    4. Obviously hunger as mentioned before, but also the "pain" of putting up with Peeta. She is the only one who is training with someone else.
    5. I would tell them to train hard while doing the things that they don"t necessarily know how to do. This would help them be well rounded.
    6. I would recomend food such as vegetables and food with electrolites so they could have lots of energy. I'd recomend protein to help them get stronger.
    7. They see a "game" that isn't a game at all. It is a competition of life and death, and to win you have to be very determined and smart all around.

    1. I think Katniss and Peeta haven't really prepared for the games. But they do things in their everyday lives that are useful in the games. Like Katniss hunts so she is good with a bow an arrow.

    2. The Career Tributes have made training a full time job, by asking the tributes to train, and having them have personal training times. But they also practice on their own time too.

    3. Haymitch has planned that Katniss and Peeta will train at what their good at during their personal training times, so that the other districts won't see what their good at. And that Katniss and Peeta will be by each others side at all times.

    4. Katniss has put up with the pain of loosing her father, and having to provide for her family. She has to put up with the pain of hunting long hours, and now has to be in the games. She will now go through the pain of training and the pressure of winning the games, so she doesn't let down her family and district 12.

    5. I would give a constant feedback to the tributes about how their comparing to other people in the games. Also on how their progressing and if they've improved at all. I would also tell them what they need to do to improve.

    6. I would recommend them to eat healthy, and make sure their eating enough. I would also recommend them to eat carbs because they give you energy.

    7. I think that seeing their families happy, healthy, and safe is what they enjoy most after success.

  17. 1. I think the time Katniss and Peeta have put in in preparation for the games are short but effective. I think that even if they go for the not as popular spots for training I think it is just as important as the other training spots. I think that their time will help them just as much as the other tributes time put in.
    2. The Career Tributes have made training a full-time job by practicing in their district even if they aren't allowed to. Their time put in might be more than the others but I don't think showing off their skills is going to help them in the games. They train all the time preparing to go to the games if they have to.
    3. Haymitch has planned out Katniss and Peeta's training by not having them show off their talents in front of the other tributes. Haymitch wants Katniss and Peeta to stay together and not be distant with each other. He wants them to practice the things that will help them get better not the things they are already good at and don't need any help with.
    4. Katniss has put up with the pain of possibly not seeing her sister or Gail again. She has put up with knowing she might die, knowing that you might never see the people she cares about again. Or even the people she doesn't like again. Knowing that her sister might suffer if her mother breaks down again about herself possibly dieing. Katniss has put up with a lot of pain and I'm sure more is coming when she is in the games.
    5. While a tribute is in training the feedback I would give them is encouragement. Things that might make it easier to got through the day. I would give them helpful skills that other tributes might not know about.
    6. I would tell the tributes to eat one night foods they might never have again. Then I would have them eat foods that would make them stronger and give them lots of energy. I would have them eat a lot of protein and things like fruits.
    7. I think that the tributes look forward to seeing their friends and families after success. Maybe looking forward to the support of others. And maybe even not worrying any more about your life.

  18. 1. I think Katniss has put a lot of time in hunting. Peeta has put in a little time with lifting bags of flower.
    2. They have trained every day like it is their job. they wake up and go train like a person would wake up and go to work.
3.Haymitch has made them not show off so they dont know what they can do so they wont expect anything from them.
    4. she has had to almost starved to death, she has had to feed her family, She is does more than her mom, and her dad died.
    5. i would tell them that they should work as hard as you can because it will pay off.
    6. pasta.
    7. they see food for the whole district, and everyone will love them in the district.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. I think that the time Katniss and Peeta put in to the Games was short. Legally, you can't train for the Hunger Games, and you and your family pray that you wont be in it, but you still should somewhat prepare if the odds aren't in your favor. I still think their preparation for the Games in training is effective with their survival skills but not so much with weaponry.

    2. The Career Tributes have been training since they were young. They've practiced illegally, yet no one cares. They have an upper-hand because they can do things other people can't and are a great deal bigger.

    3. Haymitch has planned it so that Katniss and Peeta will appear as friends or more. They do everything together in public all the time. They are to appear mediocre until their personal training sessions where they are to show what they excel in.

    4. Katniss has put up with the pain of leaving behind her family and Gale. She lost her father when she was younger. She starved for weeks because her mother never got a job before she learned how to hunt. She's had a hard life like everyone in the Seam, but she has handled it extremely well considering.

    5. Well as far as weaponry, I would tell them how they're progressing. Like if you're at the archery station, you could focus on hitting the dead center of the target. For survival skills, like making a fire, you could keep trying to make a fire and time it each time.

    6. Since most of the tributes from poorer districts, like 12, are skinny and starved. I would eat all the time to get bigger! Because in the Hunger Games being bigger could definitely be an advantage on other players. I'd also would recommend lifting a ton. That way in hand to hand combat, you'll come out on top.

    7. I think most are excited to see their families again. I mean, if you think about it, going into the Games could mean almost instant death and all the odds are against you now. They're against everyone! If you thought about winning, you'd get to be reunited with your family, and that's what you want the most. But living with all the guilt for most people would be hard. Most tributes turn to alcohol or morphlings because they can't stand it. You see horrible things and do horrible things. I don't think many people could live with the guilt of killing 1 person, let alone more than that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. Katniss has been though a lot, she knows what its like to starve and to loose a loved one, Katniss has used a bow and arrow for many years. Peeta on the other hand knows what it's like to be beaten and is a strong person.
    2. Career Tributes have made training a full time job by helping to train new tributes to compete in new games. Career Tributes have also been staying helping tributes get people to like them.
    3. Haymitch has planned out who he thinks will win the games and who needs the most training. Haymitch has also given them secrets on how to survive longer. Lastly Haymitch has shown Katniss and Peeta what the other tributes might try to do to get them to turn on each other.
    4. Katniss has put up with the pain of being starved, losing someone she loved, father, and becoming her families producer of food and supplies.
    5. During the training of tributes I would tell them who they should try to take out first and who would be easy to take out. I would also remind them why they want to win, to go back to their families.
    6. The fuel I would recommend to the tributes would be high calorie foods after training. I would also recommend small snacks and plenty of sleep.
    7. In my opinion I think the tributes see them selves with their families and having a good and fun time telling them about the capitol city, telling them about the people and how they talk. I also think the tributes see them selves being the most loved person in their district.
