8th grade SS Lab - Competitve Training

Katniss and Peeta are in the Capital and have begun their training for the Hunger Games.  The training stations include:  Basic Survival Skills (Building a Fire, Building a Shelter, Setting Snares, Tying Knots, Purifying Water), Camouflage (How military camouflage works, Hiding in plain site, Disguise and Decoy), Weather (Surviving a Storm, Survive Falling in Ice, Escape a Fire), Wildlife (Poisonous Snakes, Surviving a Snake Bite, Dangerous Insects/Spiders, Surviving a Animal Attack, Tracker Jackers), and Plants (Edible Plants, Medicinal Plants, Poisonous Plants).

Different training stations have been set up by the Game Makers for tributes to train.  Katniss and Peeta work on knots and snares as well as camouflage.  Other tributes work on areas of strength as well as intimidating other tributes.

The training the tributes experience is similar to the training practiced by Olympic athletes.  Read the following article (http://www.forbes.com/2008/07/08/training-perfect-athlete-olympics08-forbeslife-cx_avd_0708health.html) and then return to the blog to respond to the following questions:

  2. 1. Some similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes is that when you are training for the Olymipcs you have to put a lot of time and hard work into what you do as well as if you were a tribute. You have to find your strenghts and weeknesses and perfect them. You are put on diets that will help you improve what you do. In both the Olympics and the tributes you are given and/or have a coach.

    2. Some differences between tributes and Olympic athletes would be a lot of the training. While training as a tribute you are mostly learning survival, self defense, and how to play the game. While training for the Olympics you are only training for your one event the whole time. You have to put toward a lot of effort and time to be an Olympic athlete.

    3. I would add how to survive with all the different animals. You would prepare and learn how to defend yourself in these situations.

    4. I would not eliminate any of the survival skills that are being taught. I think all of them that are taught are very helpful in survival and giving you great knowledge of your surroundings in the games.

  3. 1. The similarities are that Olympic athletes train for years to be in best shape and some of the carers have trained a long time for it. It also said that they meet with a team of people that is kinda like the tributes being trained for it. They said they have to often beat out there friend, like the tributes might have to kill someone from there same district.

    2. It is different because the tributes don't get to come back like the athletes there is only 1 liveing person, and there is no 2 or 3 place. Also many of the tributes are not in phisicly fit condition like the athletes are, and besides the carers most people aren't ready.

3.If i could take one training station down it would be the surviving a snake bite. Because they don't know if the arena there going into will have snakes and you wouldn't want to waste you time on learning something that can't be used in all climites.

4.If I could add a training station it would be tracking. Because you would need it to track food and other tributes. Also you could yous it to cover up your tracks so people cant track you.

  4. 1. The similarities between the tributes and Olympic athletes are that both groups have to train very hard and be good at everything to win the competition. They also must know their weaknesses and train harder at those. An example of working hard would be the career tributes who have trained all their lives and Peeta and Katniss who go to the stations they aren't good at.

2.But the differences are that Olympic athletes have trained their whole lives where most of the tributes have only trained for three days with little to no nutrition previous. An example would be the career tributes who have had a good life and have always had nutrition. Another example would be the little twelve year old girl who hasn't had training or nutrition.

    3. If I had to add a station, I would add a station that focused on tracking and evasion. These are very important skills if you are hunting animals or people if you want to catch the prey. The evasion would be important if you know you are found and you need to escape, its nice to know how to cover your tracks and such.

    4. I wouldn't eliminate any stations because I believe that all of these stations would be important if you are going to survive twenty three tributes trying to kill you. Most of these stations would also help you to stay alive such as finding food because I would find it ironic if you died of starvation when you are being hunted.

  5. 1. In your opinion, what are the similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes? Give examples. I think they are similar because of they have to be away from their families, they have a trainer who asks personal weakness's and strength's. Also they are in teams and train next to the other teams.

    2. In your opinion, what are the differences between tributes and Olympic athletes? Give examples. Tributes have to kill each other and Olympic athletes just compete over each other also they train for their skill, not for survival skills.

    3. If you would add a training station for the tributes, what would it be and why?
A station for running so you can get away from people trying to kill you.

    4. If you would eliminate a training station, what would it be and why? Plants, Because their in different terrains so they don't exactly need a plants skill.

  6. 1. The similarities are that they both have trained for most of their lives to do what they are doing. Another thing is that they both have to train constantly and in certain to reach their maximum.

    2. the difference would be that tributes are much younger than Olympic athletes. Another thing would be that their are more skills you have to learn to be a tribute but an Olympic athlete mainly trains in one thing.

    3. I would add different fighting style station because different people might have learned different kinds of fighting styles. Also it would show how skilled you are in combat and that if it was just you and somebody else you would most likely win because you know how to fight better than them.

4 I would eliminate weight lifting because that just means you can lift a lot but you have to know certain skills to be able to survive. Like you might be able to fight somebody or something off but you have to know how to cook, find water, find food, and know what is a safe plant or not.

#1. They train a lot and put a 110% into what their doing. And they don't just practice in the gym or only in practice they practice on their own time too.
#2. I think that Olympic athletes have only one sport they really thrive in, and in the tributes have multiple.
#3. An endurance class to see how much each tribute can handle, and how strong they work together.
#4.I wouldn't take one out, because they all have a purpose in hunting and can all be used as life skills.

  8. 1.They are both dedicated to something, like a sporty and surviving.
2.The difference is an olympic athlete is always practicing and getting ready.
3.It would be getting in physical condition so your not tired all the time.
4.I would eliminate the dangerous insects station because you don't really need to know that.

  9. 1. The similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes are, they both have to train, they all have to work to win, and they all have planned out training schedules.
    2. Some differences are that the Olympic athletes are not going to die (most likely) if they lose. Also they don't have to kill each other like the tributes do.
    3. If I were to add a training station I would add hunting for food. Not just edible plants but actual food. I would add it because you kinda need food to live.
    4. If I were to eliminate one station it would be camouflage because it is important but its in my opinion the least important.

  10. 1. In your opinion, what are the similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes? Give examples.they the same in sports abilities n same talent but the thing is the olympic is better then tributes and people mainly rather watch Olymipcs

    2. In your opinion, what are the differences between tributes and Olympic athletes? Give examples.differences are different events and talent of people n people like to try and then give up if the pressure it to high for them.

    3. If you would add a training station for the tributes, what would it be and why?practicing so they would be able to compete with people in the olympics
    4. If you would eliminate a training station, what would it be and why?practicing for certain cause people dont like boring thing or sports they wanna be entertain than just turn the chanel

  11. 1. Some similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes are that they both have to beat their friends to get a spot or win. They both train hard and long to win. When they both train they practice what they need to know to win. Winning is important to both the tributes and the Olympic athletes even if the tributes reason is more important to win than the Olympic athletes.
    2. Some differences between the tributes and the Olympic athletes are that the training time is sorter for the tributes. Training for the tributes are more things to help them survive, unlike the Olympic athletes who train for a sport of event. Olympic athletes get to chose to do the work to win and most likely enjoy what they are doing. Where the tributes are forced into going into the Hunger Games.
    3. If I could add a training station I would add a place to help the tributes mentally prepare for the games. So then they wouldn't freak out and they would know how to handle certain situations better.
    4. If I could eliminate one training station I would eliminate none of the stations because to me they all are important for survival in the games. Some more than others but still are all important I think.

  12. 1. In your opinion, what are the similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes? Give examples.
The similarities between Olympic athletes and tributes are being away from your family for long periods of time, training physically, emotionally, and mentally. They also both have people who help them like, trainers and nutritionists.
    2. In your opinion, what are the differences between tributes and Olympic athletes? Give examples.
Some differences between the two are that Olympic athletes train for 4 to even 8 years, but tributes only train for a short amount of time.
    3. If you would add a training station for the tributes, what would it be and why?
I would add a training station where someone like a physcoligist would train the tributes emotionally and mentally so they could be prepared for the Hunger Games.
    4. If you would eliminate a training station, what would it be and why?
I would eliminate the tying knots training station because it's not as useful as strength building and helping to find food. I don't think tying knots will be used very much during the Hunger Games.

  13. 1. There are many similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes, one is that they both train before the games begin, second they both train hard for the gold medal.
    2. The differences between tributes and Olympic athletes are that one tributes fight to the death, and second the tributes are between the ages of 12 and 18.
    3. I wouldn't add more stealth like climbing trees and covering yourself with plants or something like that. I would add this training station because not every tribute knows how to climb trees.
    4. I wouldn't eliminate any of the training stations because the tributes need to know and work on all they can before they go out in the battlefield.

  14. 1.For both Olympians and tributes, that is what they spend most of their time doing; lots of training. Also, they both are facing mental roadblocks. In the book, Katniss and Peeta were comparing themselves to other tributes who looked bigger than them.
2.The differences between Olympians and tributes is obviously that Olympians won't be killed if they loose. Another difference is Olympians chose to do this, it's what they are passionate for, but tributes do it to save their lives.
    3. I would add something like "What to do in dangerous situations" because people aren"t thinking when they

  15. 1. Similarities between tributes and Olympic athletes is that they both have coaches to discuss their strengths and weaknesses. They both are allowed to have sponsors. Olympic atheles also seperated from their familys. They also have out door events.
    2. Differences are that Olympic athletes can give up but tributes have to compete. Olympic usually train for may years, while most truibutes tain for a few days.
    3. I would make a station the help them prepair for finding food because the little food the tributes get is risky to take.
    4. I wouldnt eliminate a training station because I think it's all usefull and improtant to know a variety of different things.

  16. 1. In my opinion what is similar about the Hunger Games and the Olympics is that they have to compete with friends you train with in order to make an Olympic team. In the Hunger Games you have to compete with someone from your district, and in some cases they may be your friends. Another similarity is they have a team of people they consult with. In the Hunger Games it's your stylists, your mentor, and someone like Effie Trinket. In the Olympics it's your nutritionists.
    2. I think the differences are how long you get to train. In the Olympics you have 4-8 years. In the Hunger Games, you legally only have around 4 days.

  17. 1. The similarities are that they have to be away from their family's for a long time to train. they have to get sleep, work on strength, and it takes a lot of work.
    2. The tributes are forced to do this and the Olympic athletes want to do it.
    3. I would add training for treating your wounds so, you don't bleed to death or get infected .
    4. I would eliminate...

  18. In the Olympics it's your nutritionist, exercise physiologist, sports medicine specialist and coach

    2. I think the differences are how long you get to train. In the Olympics you have 4-8 years. In the Hunger Games, you legally only have around 4 days. Another difference is that the Hunger Games are a fight to the death, and the Olympics are not.

    3. If I had to add a station to the training session, I would add one where you could learn about how to heal a wound with your surroundings. When you injured during the Hunger Games, it's hard to go on because you're in so much pain. If you could temporarily heal the wound, it would make it a lot easier.

    4. I wouldn't eliminate any of the stations because they're all valuable to the games. If you didn't learn on of these skills and you came across it, you'd be in trouble if you didn't know what to do!
