Weekly History and Geography - 26

An editorial cartoon, also known as a political cartoon, is an illustration or comic strip containing a political or social message, that usually relates to current events or personalities.  The following three cartoons have to do with European colonialism.  Study each cartoon carefully and then respond COMPLETELY to the following reflection questions on the blog:

1.  What do you think cartoon #1 is trying to state?  Explain.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.  What is the irony (use of words to convey the opposite of their meaning) in cartoon #2?  Explain.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.  Describe the action taking place in cartoon #3.

  1. I think cartoon 1 is trying to state that maybe the Indians in the new world didn't know people were coming so they just went on living there lives until the 3 ships came. The Irony in the 2nd cartoon is that the boat ride to a plantation is anything but a cruise. It is gruesome and awful ride that has harsh conditions. In the 3rd one, it is showing a man that has conquered a Continent and claimed it for himself.

  3. 1.I think it means that danger is coming because of the pirate ships and one of the guys in the picture said " Your so paranoid, you always think the whole world is coming to get you" 2. I think he means by "black cruises" He means that the ships ( in the background) are coming to get the African Americans for the " new market" Which I think mean's Shipping the African Americans over to another country to sell them. 3. I think he's either taking over Africa to stop slavery or the first person to take foot on Africa.

  4. 1. It may be trying to state that why the whole worlds out to get him is because 3 boats are coming from a new world and going to take their land.
    2. The irony is that they think their going to be on a cruise to the new world but they're going to be slaves.
3.That the guy is going to take over the land and land. That the guy is ruling over everything.

  11. I think cartoon #1 is trying to state that the Indians are in the "new world" to the Europeans and to the Indians the Europeans are the rest of the world. So the Indians are afraid of the Europeans or the "rest of the world."
The irony in cartoon #2 is that the people say that the nice gentlemen is taking them to the new market on a black cruise ship that people are not going on a cruise ship it is not even close to a cruise ship it is a LOT worse.
In cartoon #3 it is a European is taking Africa with him on his hat. It is just like when the Europeans took over the people in Africa for the slave trade.

2.That he is calling it the black cruise and there are african americans on the boat (not trying to be racist).

3.That someone is naming the land for their own.

  20. The 1st one shows that the natives are very paranoid. The irony in the second one is that the boat ride to America is not cruise. The third one shows a man conquering a land for his country

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think he thinks is the main tarog
he wants to get money for slaves
he is being fores on the ship

  22. Picture number 1 is trying to say that people are coming to get them, you can see the ships in the background, it's funny because the guy is saying "you think the whole world is out to get you" but part of the world just might be.

Picture number 2 is ironic because the "white men" are kidnapping the African's, and it would not be like a cruise at all. They are trying to convince the African that they are just going on a cruise, and will be back. Even though they will be sentenced to a life of slavery.

Picture number 3 the action taking place is white people taking over Africa and putting many people into slavery.

  23. I think the guy is trying say there land is going to be took over. Because they look like native people and it looks like there is exsplores in the back round. Exciting, because they think it will be fun. It is a army man and he is tiping hid hat.

I think the first cartoon is stating that the blacks lived normally thinking they were safe but the white men came. I think the irony of the second one is that the black people think that it's going to be a nice cruise when it's really a horrible journey. The third one I think is that much of Africa was under control of the white men.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. I don't really understand the picture. But it does look funny.

They have skulls on the ends of there sticks which might be why he thinks the world is coming for him. Or he might just only think about himself and want people to come after him and only him.
    2. He is trying to lure African Americans to come and be a slave without them knowing. He's trying to make it seem like there going on a fabulous trip but there really not.
    3. You can see that there's a huge guy who is standing on Africa. He is holding some kind of string that is connected to Africa. Maybe that white people are in control of Africa

  48. !. I think it is trying to say that so many Africans were being captured be anyone and everyone, that it is hard to know who your friends and who are your enemies. So, they would "protect" themselves if someone was suspicious.

    2. They think it is a great thing to go on this cruise but they are really going to have the worst conditions on the boat, and will soon be slaves. The man trying to persuade them is even holding and GUN!!

    3. I think the action this is trying to show that when someone discovers a place, they claim it and it is theirs, along with the surrounding areas. So, this person has the land from one giant foot to the other, and is showing that it is his.

    ReplyDelete
  63. 1. You notice in the background 3 small ships, and 2 men talking. One is saying to the other, "You always think the whole world is coming to get you."
It's funny because the world actually IS coming to get him,and proves the falseness of his statement.
    2. The fact that there is a white man in colonial clothes holding a gun, pointing it at Africans in chains, in a tropical biome, with a ship in the background to take them to America implies that the Africans are slaves. So him saying that they're going on a cruise is ironic.
    3. The white man wearing colonial clothes seems to be holding up Africa, but he's standing on it showing conquering.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Picture #1. Either Christopher Columbus and the rest of the Europeans on the ships are sailing toward the America's and they're going to conquer the Indian's land or Europeans are sailing toward Africa to capture slaves.
