Articles of Agreement
Ahoy!  In the second half of the 17th century, buccaneers began to develop a set of rules that governed behavior on board ship. These regulations were called by various names—The Pirate Code, Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Articles of Agreement. The ship’s company for a particular voyage would sign a document agreeing to the conditions.  In this activity, you will explore what it means to make—and break—a rule or law.
After reading the Articles of Agreement, choose 3 slips of paper, read the sticky situations, and then decide what the outcome should be. Your decision must include which Article used to solve the problem and why.  Good luck me hearties!

  1. Sticky Situation 3: Barnacle Bill goes up on deck to look at the stars, but it's so dark he lights a candle to find his way. The Captain tells him that he must swab the deck and extra time. Bill is Furious
Solution: Article 4. He lit a candle after eight because the stars are out and he has to sit on the deck without a light.
Sticky Situation 2: During a fierce fight, Fuzzy Beard is revealed to be a girl! She fought so well that she'd like to join the crew.
Solution: Article 6. Because she was in disguise as a man she has to be put to death.
Stick Situation 9: Johnny claims he's the best prate on board and Patches disagrees. They start fighting until the Quartermaster tells them to go get their pistols. Suddenly Patches wants to apologize.
Solution: Article 8. Patches probably isn't good with his pistol and would rather used his cutlass so he apologizes because he knows he's going to lose.

Situation 4. Article 10 says that only men that fight get one and one quarter of the share and anyone of higher rank get more because they have more authority so Tatters can't get more money unless he has a higher rank.

Situation 8. Article 11 says that the musicians can only rest on the Sabbath Day or if the captain says he doesn't so Bangles can't rest.

Situation 11. Article 2 says that any man that has kept a jewel for himself and the captain finds out he is to have his nose and ears slit then be put ashore so Sam will not be on the crew anymore.

  3. Situation 2: Article VI because Fuzzy Beard was a girl, and there were no girls alowed on the ship.
Situation 6: Article V + Article VII because He wasn't ready for action.
Situation 11: Article II because he stole an emerald from the treasure and his consequence is that he should be put ashore or marooned for his crime.

  4. situation 6 Dave should be punished by death or marooning as it says in article 7.
situation 1 he should get the same as every one else as it says in article 1.
situation 5 in article 3 it says no gaming for money so you shoulden't get reimbursed.

    ReplyDelete
  5. sticky situation 10 will go with article 5 because it says each man shall keep his piece, cutlass and pistols at all time clean and ready for action.
sticky situation 7 will go with article 6 because it says no boy or woman to be allowed amongst them.if any man shall be found carrying a woman in disguise he shall suffer death think that will fit because its talking about suffering and carrying them to sea. sticky situation 1 will go with article one because its saying every man shall have an equal vote in affairs of moment.he shall have an equal title to the fresh provisions or strong liquors at any time seized, and shall use them at pleasure unless a scarcity may make it necessary for the common good that a retrenchment may be voted.

  6. Sticky Situation 11- I think article number 2 would work for situation 11 because it would not be far if "slippery Sam" got away with his crime and not others, because if the caption said that this was a warning more people would commit something like or like this crime.

Sticky Situation 2- I think article number 6 would work for situation 2 because if a man was to have a women or young boy fight they would recive harsh punishment. But women could be good fighters so that makes it a harder choice especially if she has helped them win a important battle.

Sticky Situation 8- I think article number 11 would work for situation 8 because you have signed up for that position and you are expected to serve that position unless it is "Sabbath Day" or if the caption doesn't want you to play that day he requestes you to not play.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Sticky Situation #2
I say that she should be aloud to join. From article number 1 it says that every man should have an equal vote and rights. This means that she can join like the others would be allowed to join.
    Sticky Situation #5
I say that he shouldn't be able to reimburse since article number 3 says that none shall game for money neither with dice or cards. This means that poker would be excluded since it is a game of money.
    Sticky Situation #6
I say that Dangerous Dave should be marooned since in article number 7 says that none shall desert the ship or quarters in time of battle and shall be punished by death or marooning. This means that he can be marooned.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Situation 5. Article 3 states that no one should game for money either with dice or money.
Situation 8. He has to because In article 11 it says that the musicians should only rest on Sabbath Day only by the right and on all other days by favor only. It states that he has to play his Fiddle even though he doesn't want to.
Situation 1. It states in Article 1 that everyone should have the same amount of food and rum.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sticky situation 7: It is proved not to be fair because article 9 says every man who should become a cripple/ lose a limb needs to get paid before putting him ashore.

Sticky situation 9: It is proved not to be fair because article 8 says "None shall strike another on board the ship, but every man's quarrel shall be ended on shore by sword or pistol in this manner."

Sticky situation 10:It is proved not to be fair because article 5 says: "Each man shall keep his piece, cutlass and pistols, at all times, clean and ready for action."

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1.Situation 3, article 4 not fair because the article says that you have to sit upon the open deck without lights not swab the deck an extra time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. situation 1 and article 1 problem, he demands better food and more rum for the regulars on board.
Every man shall have the food and drinks, he should stop complaning because it states every man has the same amount.
    2. situation 10 and article 4 problem, he didn't have his pistol cleaned so his says he can't fight. At all times they should have there weapons cleaned, he should still fought with a sword.
    3. situation 4 and article 10 problem, he demands a huge prize for helping the his ship to victory. If his private gentlemen he receives as much as the rest of private gentlemen. He doesn't receive as much as the capatain.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sticky Situation 6: In Article 7 says that Dave should be marooned for deserting the ship of his quarters in time of battle.
Sticky Situation 9: In Article 8 says there shouldn't be any striking to another on board, but every man's quarrel shall be ended on shore by sword or pistol in this manner.

STICKY SITUATION 6:RELATES TO ARTICLE 5, BECAUSE DANGEROUS DAVE SAID THAT HE WAS TOO SLEEPY AND DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING OR ANYONE FIGHTING AT THE TIME.DANGEROUS DAVE SHOULD HAVE GONE TO BED EARLY THAT NIGHT AND ALSO BE READY TO FIGHT AT ALL TIMES,EVEN WHEN THERE ISN'T ATTACK, THEY SHOULD STILL BE READY NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS.

sticky SITUATION 9RELATES TO ARTICLE 1,BECAUSE IF ONE PERSON THINKS HE'S BETTER THAN THE REST OF THE CREW ,THEY WILL START TO FIGHT WITH EACH OTHER.

    ReplyDelete
  15. sticky situation 1
This can not happen because in article 1 that every man shall have equal amonts of fresh provisions or strong liquor.

    sticky situation 3
this will be aloude because article 4 says that all lights and candles must be put out at eight at night.

    sticky situation 10
cool hand must join the fight because article 5 stats that all pistols and cutlasses must be clean at all times.

    ReplyDelete
  16. situation 6
yes in article 7 it says they can maroon him because he left the quarters of his ship.

    Sticky Situation 11
    Article ll
Every man shall be called fairly in turn by the list on board of prizes, because over and their proper share, they are allowed a shift of clothes. But if they defraud the company to the value of even one dollar in plate, jewels, or money, they shall be marooned. if any man rob another he shall have his nose and ears slit, and be put ashore where he shall be sure to encounter hardship.
    Sticky Situation 1
Article X The captain and quartermaster shall each receive two share of a prize. The gunner and boatswain, one and one half shares, all other officers one and one quarter, and private gentlemen of fortune one share each.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sticky Situation 2: Article 6 solves the situation because it says that No boy or woman to be allowed amongst them.

Sticky Situation 3: Article 3 solves the situation because it says The lights and candles should be out at eight at night and if any of the crew desire to drink after that hour they shall sit upon the open deck without lights.

Sticky Situation 5: Article 3 solves the situation because it says None shall game for money either with dice or cards.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Situation 1 - Id go with ARTICLE X. It says that the first mate will receive one and one quarter of the profit from the loot. The first mate is and officer and the officers only receive one and one quarter.
Situation 5 - Id go with ARTICLE III. It says that nobody shall play with cards, which poker is cards, so if he isn't supposed to be playing poker, he wont get reimbursed.
Situation 8 - Id go with ARTICLE XI. It says that the musicians shall only have rest on sunday and if they want rest they should ask for a vote. The man should ask for a vote.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sticky situation three-it is fair that he has to swab the deck because article four says all candles should be put out at eight p.m.

  22. sit. 1-this is a toss up between I and X, but i think X is correct because the captain and headquarters get 2 x's as much shares of a prize, which is what's happening.
sit. 5-article 3. states that no one can gamble pretty much, which is what he is doing.
sit. 6-article two because they are going to maroon him becuz he wasnt ready. which is what article 2 states.

  24. situation 6- article vii, Dangerous Dave was tired so he wasn't in the fight and he was sleeping. Article vii solves it by marooning him because he wasn't in the battle.

situation 5- article 3, Curly Kid spent his money gambling on poker. Article 3 solves it by not reimbursing him, because you cannot gamble.

situation 2 - article 5, Fuzzy Beard was a good fighter but he was a girl!!! So article 5 solves that by you have to kill her!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sticky situation # 6 - Article VII - I think they should maroon him because he did not help.

Sticky situation # 8 - Article XI - I don't think it is right for the captain to make him play when he is tired. i think he should rest so he has energy to play.

Sticky situation # 11 - Article II - I think that he should be deserted. Because he tried to steal from everybody's share.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sticky Situation 3- I chose article 4 because the lights must be out at eight. So when Barnacle Bill lights a candle the captain is right for yelling at him because it is after hours so he shouldn't have had a candle lite.
Sticky Situation 4- I chose article 10 because Tatters demands more of the prize even though they all are supposed to get the same amount of money. No more no less.
Sticky Situation 9- I chose article 8 since they started fighting so Patches can't refuse to fight because if he does then the quarter master (who demanded them to fight) will knock the piece out of his hand.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Situation 11. I agree because article 2 says that if anyone takes more than they get they will be put on a deserted island and be left their.

Situation 2. If this where to happen the man who let a women aboard would be killed.

Situation 5. in article 3 it says that their is no gambling on the ship so this would have to be a underground game.

Sticky Situation 2: As said in Article ll, everyone on board gets their proper share. If anyone steals the littlest amount of money, they can be marooned immediately. Slippery Sam can be deserted at the closest island.
Sticky Situation 8: As said in Article Xl, only on Sabbath Day (Sunday) shall Bangles be allowed to not play his fiddle upon request. Bangles must play his fiddle.

  29. Sticky Situation #6 relates to article V, and article VII because in article V it basically states that each man should be ready for action at all times, which Dave is not. He also was not available at the time of a battle, and he should be marooned on an island, or be sentenced to death.

Sticky Situation #7 relates to article IX because the Red should not be abandoned on an island without 800 pieces of eight from the common stock. He leg was amputated, therefore his crew cannot dispose of him.

Sticky Situation #8 relates to article XI, he should have to play because the only day he should have off is the Sabbath day and any other days by favor only. Even if he is tired, he should push through it.

(I think it's funny that I had 6,7,and 8 in a row, by the way.)

  30. Sticky Situation 1. Article 1 because it says that all men should have an equal vote on all affairs of moment.
Sticky Situation 11. Article 11 because it states that every man shall be called fairly in turn by the list of o board prizes, because over and above their proper share, they are allowed a shift of clothes. 31. 2.During a fierce fight, Fuzzy Beard is revealed to be a girl! She's fought so well that she'd like to join the crew. Now that's what i call a sticky situation. Well by pirate code 6 no women shall be aloud on board and if a man is caught with one they will be killed. Well even though no man was carrying her she is still a women and not aloud on the ship she should be killed or marooned.
7.Red has been wounded. The surgeon amputates his leg just below the knee. The company wants to put him ashore at the next port without pay. Well by the pirate code 9 if a man loses a limb or crippled they should get 800 pieces of eight.
    8. Its Friday night and Bangles is tired. He doesnt feel like playing his fiddle, but the Captain insists. What should Bangles do? Well by pirate code 11 the only time he cant play is on sundays.

  32. sticky situation 1:is article 11 because article 11 is about having everything man or women should be treated fairly. Everyone is deserved proper care and the same equal amount of everything.

Sticky Situation 11: is article 1 because i think since the man pleaded to stay on the ship with them so they might have voted to see if he should leave or stay on the boat and it is up to the ship mates to see if they should stay.

Sticky Situation 10: is article iv because no one is able to come up to another boat without a woman and i'm sure that he didnt have a woman with him and he was not able to go because he didnt have a woman to bring over there.
