8th Grade SOS #20

The Drummer Boy of Shiloh
1.  BACKGROUNDS:  Civil War battles often had two names. The North named battles after landmarks and the South named battles after near by towns.  If a battle were to have occurred in Iowa; hypothetically name a battle in Linn County with a Northern and Southern title.
2.  TALKING DRUMS: If you had to make a drum pattern to signal wake-up calls, formations, and meals; what would they sound like and why?  (Use IMAGERY to describe the sound and tempo.)
3.  AN EASY TARGET: Sharpshooters favorite targets were drummer boys.  Do you think there should have been a "rule of war" protect the lives of drummer boys?  Why or why not?
4.  JOHNNY SHILOH:  Johnny Clem was honored with the title of sergeant for his heroism at Shiloh.  What kind of honors can kids earn today for their heroism?  Explain.
5.  THE LAST DRUMMERS:  When drums and bugles became more difficult to hear during battles, what do you think would serve as better communication and why?

40 comments:

  1. 1.North-Marion Square Battle, South- Ellis River Battle.

2.Meals-drum roll then 3 loud hits on the drum to signal breakfast, lunch and dinner. Wake up calls- the beat of the drum starts out slows and quickens throughout campus from whole notes to 16th notes. Formations- 4 steady beats on one drum, eighth notes on another drum and 16th notes on the last drum and each drum at the ending quicken up to a 16th note and then slow down to 4 steady beats.

    3. It should be a rule that whichever side loses the drummer boys have to die along with the rest of the soldiers. Whichever side ends with their drummer boys still alive wins.

    4. If they are heroes they might be in the news or get a medallion or something like a form of a trophy. Other times when you do something good you'd get a ticket to put in a drawing. Like Vernon Middle School.

    5. In the 21st century we'd use walkie talkies that are super tiny and with super awesome signal. Or perhaps a marine phone that can be abused and still work. Or back in the day they might be able to use megaphones!

  2. 1. BACKGROUNDS: The Union would name it the Battle of the Cedar River. The Confederates would name it the Battle of Marion.

    2. TALKING DRUMS:
Wake-up calls - The wake-up call would be loud and really fast because you want to wake them up not just alert them.
Formations - The formations would sound like short and fast to tell them to hurry up and form.
Meals - The meal time would be really loud and slow because I think it would tell them to don't all come at once but they want to hurry.

    3. AN EASY TARGET: I think that there should have been a rule that if you shot the drummer boy you would lose the war because the drummers were like 8, 9, or 10. They are just little boys.

    4. JOHNNY SHILOH: I don't think that there area any that I know of, but there should be because kids can do things heroic not just adults.

    5. THE LAST DRUMMERS: I think that they should use mega phones from all sides to everybody can here them not just the people that are closest to the person yelling.

  3. 1. Northern Name could be Battle of Cedar River and the Southern Name could be Battle Of Cedar Rapids.
    2. Wake-up calls would sound very loud with loud bangs. It would be a sound that would startle you. Formations would be at a normal pitch. It would have a steady beat so you can stay on track. Meals would be a roll that has a crescendo and then a decrescendo. It would just keep going up and down.
    3. I don't think that there should have been a rule about protecting drummer boys. I don't think it's fair that drummer boys got shot and I feel bad for them because they were young, but it is a war and if you sign up for war you have to expect that your going to be wounded or killed. There aren't "rules" in war, necessarily.
    4. Kids can't get very many honors... that I know of. At Vernon, kids can get tickets for doing the right thing. In present day 2012 kids don't do very courageous and brave acts of heroism..at least not in Iowa.
    5. Better communication would be firing gunshots because people can hear gunshots. But that would be a disadvantage because then you wouldn't know when your being fired at. People could use megaphones to communicate to.

  4. 1. The South name landmark would be Palo Park landmark. The North would be the Manchester for the town landing.
2.Wake of call would be a big bang of a really big sound. Formations would be like a bell or a drum roll beginning soft then loud. Meals could be like a really loud rumble of a drum to run or hurry to the meal areas.
    3. Yes because they are important and should not be "the target" for most shooters.
4.Today you can get like different kinds of hero awards for doing something like saves someone lives at a pool if a kid wasn't breathing well. You could be put in parades for your honor and get something from the capital.
5.I think there could be a very loud announcer that had a type of megaphone that you could yell into.

2.For wake up calls I would just do 2 big bangs on the drum, for meals I would do really loud every other one times, and for formations I would do one loud then one soft one loud and one soft 4 times.
3.Yes because it's kinda hard for them to run away and there just standing there and cant really do anything so I think they should be left alone.
4.Some do get heroism because they could save someones life easily like anyone else can but the older people get more because they know how to do more stuff and they have been around longer!!
5.They could use a mega phone because you can yell really loud in it!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. 1.north and south landmarks are bull run and Manassas.

    2. the wakes-up calls would sound like a low bang then it gets louder each time than the last bang. the formation call would sound like loud bang every time, the meal calls would sound like a really fast beat.

3.the rule would be to shot the the trees or scarecrow if there was one.

    4. grab a rifle if you don't want to die at a young age.

5.because the people were so far apart from each other and they can't hear the drums over the gun shots, and they should have been close together so they hear the drum beats and know what to do and the can see the other soldiers and the enemy and they know what to in case of a wounded soldier and they can get out of there if they need to.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1.North- The battle of the Indian
    South- Battle of Marion
2.wake up would be high tempo and loud To make sure they got up
meal would be medium tempo and loud, loud enough so they would hear.
formations would be slow tempo and loud, So the soldiers could hear the beats clearly.
    3. No,because if your in war you risk your life for country and its stragic to take their line of communcations. They're risk too.
    4. I don't know,but they're should be like a medal.
    5. Fires, you can see it from a long distance and you don't have to worry about hearing.

    1. A northern name would be called The Battle at Thomas Park. A southern name would be The Battle of Cedar Rapids.

    2. Wake-up call; a wake-up call would sound like a rushing river so like prum-prum-prum papapaprum-prum-prum and it would go on and on. Formations; a formation would be a single hit every 6 beats and then when everyone is lined up the drummer would drum really fast for 10 beats. Meals; Breakfast would be the same as wake-up. Lunch would sound like a herd of deer sounding really loud. Dinner would be really slow with a hit every beat and would have it be really fast eighth notes every 8 beats.

    3. I think drummer boys should be protected because if they weren't alive than the army wouldn't know what to do and would get killed immediately.

    4. Boy Scouts get badges for helping the community and doing many other things. Kids on sports teams can receive medals sometimes.

    5. A megaphone or a gong or a bell because they would stand out over many other things like guns and explosives.

Question 3) There should have been a rule because a lot of the times drummer boys were younger like 10 to 11 years old. And if the their opponents shot the drummer boy the drummer boys wouldn't be able to give their calls of attack witch would confuse "his side"

Question 4) Maybe a heroism award to show how brave they we in the heat of the moment.

Question 5) Maybe they could use a canon and shoot one if there was a thing for 1 shot, 2 to shoot, and 3 or + if you had to retreat.

    3. They shouldn't be able to shoot an unarmed drummer boy however, if a drummer boy arms himself with a weapon from a fallen soldier, he is fair game for sharpshooters.

    4. Boy and Girl Scouts earn badges for their heroism and citizenship but there doesn't seem to be many other opportunities for kids to get recognized.

    5. Walkie-talkies and radios for giving instructions and getting instructions. Flags would be good. Messages by pigeons. Messages by dogs. These are explains with and without technology.

  12. Question 1-
    North- Battle of Marion Square
    South- Battle of Marion

    Question 2-
Wake up Call- Loud barrage of sharp hits so it wakes people up.
Formation- More of a orderly beat, also loud and sharp because people would hear the orderly sound and know to get in a orderly formation.
Meals- Another loud, but slow large hits. The reason is because its different and easy to understand.

    Question 3-
I think the drummer boys should be protected somehow. My first reason is that they where just little boys. Second is that they had nothing to defend themselves. Drummer boys also should not do shooting if others can not shoot them.

    Question 4-
I really don't know any awards kids can get. I think I have heard of some, but I'm do not remember the names. I think that they should get a reward if they do something big like saving someone, and not just something stupid like doing someone's chores.

    Question 5-
I think mabey a extremly loud bell. I know you can increase the sound by tweaking size and thickness. If it was our day of age, I say something more practical like a walkie- talkie.
A bell would work well because it would be easy to use and get messages out quick. It also could be louder than a drum.

meals: ring ring ring. it sounds like a dinner bell.
    3. I think that they shouldn't kill them. because they really did nothing wrong. and i am guessing that they will join your side.
    4. maybe like when some one is being bullied and they come in and stop it. first they stoped a fight when people could get hurt. and they helped a phoone in need.
    5. i think they should have a trian horne with them. its way louder then a drum. and most people should be able to hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1.(Backgrounds) For the North, the battle would probably be called The Cedar Rapids Raid or maybe the Marion Massacre. For the South, it could be Marion Square or the Walker War.
2.(Talking Drums) For a wake-up call, it could be a continuous roll on the drums to alert everyone to get up. For formations, I would have one tap for forward every ~10 seconds, two taps for stop, and three taps to aim, and four taps to fire. For Meals, it could be an irregular beat on the drum.
3.(An Easy Target) There should be rules for that!!!!! When they mean drummer BOYS they mean BOYS drumming! Other men should not be killing boys because they are just boys. They're should be a law that if you hit a drummer boy, you should be hung or shot for the crime.
4.(Johnny Shiloh) Kids could earn high honors like meeting the president, getting an award, having support from everyone that knows you, maybe a college scholarship, or just a little bit of fame.
5.(The Last Drummers) Megaphones would be of good use. If they have certain technology, they could make walkie-talkies or signaling radios. They could also communicate using morse-code to send secret messages, but then again, it wouldn't be that helpful because all of the soldiers would have to learn the code and the enemy might know the code and decipher their message.

  16. 1. The North might name it ceder river and the south may name it Marion.

    2. The drum pattern for wake up calls would be three steady hits then a roll. this would be repeted three times. The formtion pattern would be one ,rest two three. Lunch would be a roll then one two roll and so on.

3.I belive that there should be a rule of war saying that sharp shoters are not to shot drummer boys. But if they are armed they can shot them but Not to kill..

    5. I think that trumpets would sereve as beter camunication becuse thier loud sharp sonds pierces the air which cause it to be beeter heard.

    2. Wake up calls-faaassssttt and loud. :)
    formation-5 slow hits
    meals- 10 loud hits

    3. Yes, i think there should be a rule about not shooting the drummer boys. There is no reason to shoot them if they are just basically drumming. But if they are armed with rifles and are shooting then they can shoot back, just not to kill.

    4. Kids can be rewarded by college scholarships, getting to meet famous people, getting medals, ect.

    5. Walkie talkies would work quite well i think. Or if they would have had the right technology then they could have walkie talkie type things in their helmets so they don't have to carry around that thing on their waist.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. North Marion-square South Cedar-river
    2. I would have 20 loud beats for a wake up call and 3 little beats for lunch
    3. I think there should be a rule because its not fair to let curtain people die and others don't drummer boys come to battle and participate in the war and don't have to.
    4. Kids today can earn heroism by doing good in school and skip a grade above average, also for sport to win a tournement or state champion.
    5. I think that it would be good to use a blow horn because they are loud and you can say exactly what you want to do.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. South: Battle of Marion North: Battle of Indian Creek

    2. A wake up call would be as loud as possible and really fast so everyone would here and notice it. For formations it would be 2 or three fast soft notes but then 1 loud slow note and it would keep repeating. Meals would be really slow but loud notes that keep repeating.

3 I think their should be because their where the youngest people in the war and are going to live longer that somebody in their 40's.

    4. I think the only kind of awards kids get for heroism is just a certificate since kids usually don't do much.

    5. I think radios or walkee talkee's would be a good communication system.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. The North might name it Battle of Sundown the Souths could be the battle of Cedar Rapids
    2. The drum patter for meals would be really fast and loud. Formations would be a quieter and slower than a meal and have a roll at the end. For wake-up drumming would be like a beaver slapping something with its tail loud and slow.
    3. In war they should not to have been able to shoot drummer boys unless they were armed if so then they could.
    4. If a kid was to do something heroic they would get something like a trophy or a metal and in the news.
    5. Now-a-days they use walkie talkies and phones and radio transmitters.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. North: Battle of May's Island
    South: Battle of Cedar Rapids
    2. Wake up: I would do twenty constant bangs.
Formations: For attacking I would do a constant beat with a second pause in between each one, to sound like marching. For retreating I would do three fast beats *pause* three fast beats *pause* to get their attention.
Meals: I would do five quick taps five times in a row.
    3. I would make a law because almost all drummer boys are children and shooting children should be illegal.
    4. Good grades, sports awards, and allowance are rewards for kids.
    5. Hand signals would be the best communication because it requires no hearing or yelling.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. North- The Battle of Marion Square. South- The battle of Marion.
    2. formations- loud, fast like Metallica.
Wake up- loud slow and many times. to wake them up.
Mealtimes- slow and quiet, because you want some people not to hear it so they don't eat all the food.
    3. There probably was a rule for it. Sadly some people probably had to give up there lives for the drummer boys to keep on drumming.
    4. Kids can gain honor. Kids can get TV shows, movies, and books made about them. I saw one person in the Olympics for it.
    5. I think walkie talkies and bullhorns could work now.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. North: Battle of Cedar. South: Marion square of time walkers.

    2. -Formations; Repetitive fast beats, like a WoodPeeker. -Meals;Kind of sounding like a microwave timer going off. -Wake ups; Very loud kind of like pots and pans dropping.

    3. Yes! Being a drummer myself, i strongly think there should be some sort of maybe like a glass shed or something maybe up high that they could play in.

    4. I think rewarding is fine, it's just the matter of what degree the tasks are done.

5.I think maybe a trumpet, or really loud ringing bells would be better at making the warning systems of communication.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. Northern Name would be Battle of Indian Creek and Southern Name would be Battle of Marion.

    2. My wake up call would be lightning sharp with quick, precise, beats. My lunch call would be a long, rolling beat with sharp whip noises in the middle. My formation call would have a quick tempo with long, thunderous beats.

    3. I think not because shooting a person goes back to ethics but if you're on the field of battle you should be considered a target and when you're the comm's person you're a h.v.t.

    4. Kid's these days only get tickets for their bravery and should get more rewards for their great importance in this world.

    5. I think the use of radios and flags would be of good use because if the radio breaks you could still have communication with the commanders and the enemy wouldn't know what you're saying.

    ReplyDelete
  25. south might name it the Indians and north may name it ceder valley.
    2. the wake up call would be super loud and have a fast steady hits.the lunch would sound very soft like a bunny hopping around. formations would be very fast repeated beats like when thunder roaring.
    3. yes i do think there should have been a rule for people not to shoot the drummer boys because their role was really important. they kept beat of the march so they could stay in steady beat.
    4. i think kids now a days do get awarded because they don't really care for it anymore.
    5. i think maybe a gun shoot that was off the beat of the gun fires.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. Northern battle name would be Battle of Indian Creek. Southern battle name would be Massacer of Marion.

    2. wake-up calls would be really fast and loud like a jackhammer.
formations would be a slow steady rate like a person walking slowly but a lot louder.
meals would be loud and fast but slower than a wake-up call and faster than formations like a heartbeat.

    3. Yes, they should have had a rule because they were usually younger than ten.

4.Today we get rewards like being on honor roll and other rewards that recognize you when your being good.

    5. They could have a person shoot their gun a certain amount of times for different formations.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1.North Battle of Indian Creek South Battle of Marion
    2. The drum beat would start quiet and slow then get load and fast then it would go to the beat of a rock son a different rock son for wake ups, formation and meal time
    3. I think that they should make a rule of war not to shot them because most of the young boys would join and become a drummer boys and they don't have a gun to shot back at them.
    4. I don't think kids get important awards because they cant join the miletery and get those cool awards.
    5. They should yous dixe cups and strings and have people guard them

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1.)north- Butterfield Battle
    Battle of Cedar Falls.

    2. Formations- the sound of men beating on the ground in the beat of the men moving.
Wake up calls- repeated drumming like the sound thunder rolling
Meals- three hits on the drum like 3 cracks of lightning.

    3. Yes, i do think that they should of had a rule against hitting the drummer boys because the drummer boys keep the men in beat and keep them moving.

    4. For children's heroism they should get a medal and plack in honor of there success. They shoudl be able to meet the president also.

    5. I think they should use a whistle becasue whistles are loud and they are easy to follow and listen to.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. the two names could be the Battle of Hiawatha and the other could be Cedar River Rage.
    2. the pattern could last for 8 counts and repeat as needed. they would be a roll that is getting louder throughout the 8 counts. that would be wake up. meals would be a loud roll for 4 seconds then a soft roll for 4 seconds, repeat as needed. formation would be in 2/4 time. on the first beat would a a loud hit and on the and on the and of the second beat would be a soft hit. repeat as needed. all would have an alarming sound

    3. i dont think they should be aloud to shoot because they are not technically threatening them because they are not armed with weapons.

    4. well for kids they are usually featured on a talk show of some type. on a small scale, a simple thank you is all thee is.

    5. i think an oboe should be used because they can be miss heard for a duck. there side would know but the other wouldn't. btw i like oboes:))

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1. If a battle were to take place in Linn County Iowa, I think the name the south would give it would be '5 Seasons Battle' and the North would name it the 'The Battle of Indian Creek'.

    2. For the wake up call, I would definitely use really quick repetition, like a woodpecker constantly pecking a tree. I would chose this because I know I like a repetitive sound to wake me.
For the formations, I would have a steady four beats getting quicker and quicker for 5 minutes, so you know you have to get in place by the time it's fastest.
For the meals, I would have the drummer boys all beat their drums simultaneously in a slow steady beat.

    3. I think they should have protected the drummer boys. They were innocent, some not even 12 years old. Why should you kill them, when you could kill the real enemy, whether that be the north or south. It's like bombing a hospital that holds wounded, what's the point?

    4. Some awards kids get for heroism today are pbis tickets, or maybe a honor roll certificate. I never really see kids get awards, a lot of kids are over protected by their parents, so they never have the opportunity to do something heroic.

    5. I think that radios and headsets would serve better in the place of bugles and drums. A siren could also be the wake up call, also doubling for the mealtime.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1. For the North, The Battle of Indian Creek. For the South, The Battle of Linn.
    2. The wake-up call would start off slow and quiet, and then would crescendo to a loud and quick tempo. Formations would be loud and accented, so that the army would understand the order. And lunch would be announced by a low rumble.
    3. Yes, I do think there should have been a rule to protect the drummer boys. Because usually they were a lot younger than the rest and they were unarmed. So it should be unfair to take advantage of and unarmed person because the drummers have no chance against a gun.
    4. Kids today are honored by maybe meeting the president or being given a medal for their heroism. There really aren't many awards for kids in this day and age because many people don't really care if some random kid saved a life. Because it doesn't pertain to them.
    5. I think that a louder instrument should have been used. Maybe a bass drum or cymbals.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. The north would be the battle of Indian creek.
The south would call it the battle of Ceder Rapids.
    2. For when they wake up it would start soft and keep getting louder. dinner it would be 5 loud hits, and formations would be 2 hits.
    3. i think the drummer boys should be protected because they have no guns, or knifes.
    4. kids these days get awards for school, and that's just about it.
    5. I think they should use an air horn because they are really loud.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. The North might call it the Indian Creek War. The South might call it Rapid War for Cedar Rapids.
2.I think that for wake up calls it should be loud and annoying and repeated a lot because I can be a deep sleeper. For formations I'd have it shout and to the point and for meals I would have them bang on the drums loud because I would not want to miss lunch.
3.I think there should be a rule that they cant shoot the drummer boy. They could only if he started shooting at them.
4.I don't think we earn honors. If it is its small stuff like tickets unless your in boy scouts and you get badges.
5.They probably could use a big loud bell? It's hard to think of thinks that are louder than guns.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1.I think the South would name it the Battle of squaw creek and the North would name it the Cedar Rage.
2.What beat I would do for wake up is accelerating and sticato. With a series of crashes like thunder.
The formations would be a serious beat of pounding evenly spread out but not accelerating. The meals would be a catchy beat of harmony. It would be like a man working with an axe cutting down the tree.
3.I think there should be a rule on the drummer boys because they are not that old and its like throwing a life away that hasn't gotten a chance to explore the world.
4.Kids get honored in little prizes because most of us cant handle a bigger prize such as money because they will blow it away. At least i would.
5.What i would make is make a funnel like shape to go on the front of the drum to send out more sound across the field.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. The North would have called it the Battle at Thomas. The South would call it the Battle at Marion.
    2. The wake up call would be slow and loud because it sounds angry and whenever I wake up I am angry. Meal time would be loud and fast because when we hear the lunch bell we rush down to the lunch room and it is loud and fast. Formations would be steady and medium in order to sound like marching.
    3. Yes I do think there should be a rule about shooting the drummer boy. I think there should be because they aren't a threat so why even shoot at them. If they pick up a gun and start shooting at you then you can shoot them.
    4. I do not think kids get awards because they are already given almost everything free.
    5. I think pagers would work better because everyone has one so everyone can hear it.

  36. Question One. The North's naming of their battle would be The Battle Of Cedar Rapids. The South's naming would be The Battle Of Indian Creek.
Question Two. The wake up calls would be extremely loud, fast, and quick repetitions to make sure they're awake. For formations, it would be loud/ medium loud so they could hear, but only about one, two, or three hits of the drum (it matters which formation), so enemies can't know what formation they are doing. For meals, I would make the drums roll louder and louder, so they can hear, and it is different than the other drummings.
Question Three. I believe there should be a rule, but i also believe there shouldn't be. I believe they were to young to be in that kind of place, but I also think that they were there and they would have to protect themselves.
Question Four. I don't think kids get honored very much these days. They usually get to be on tv...and that is all, and newspapers.
question five. walky talkies because when you hear voices, you get more information, but i also think it is a bad idea because you could loose signal and battery.

  37. 1.North-Town Square battle
    South- Cedar River battle

2.wake-up calls- Loud but peaceful, Like rain falling down.
formations- Sticato and fast like pouring rain but as loud as a thunder boom.
meals- Annoying like a tornado siren but ends much faster.
    3. I think that they should have made a rule were the drummer boy can't be shot at during war. If there shot there should be a punishment.
4.At school, You get rewarded with tickets to enter for the drawing. I don't think kids really get rewarded for doing good stuff, it's usually because they should already do good stuff not just for a reward.
5.In those's times they didn't really have much so it was probably hard to communicate. I think it would have been helpful to have pagers or something.

  39. 1. The north might have called a battle The Battle of Indian Creek and the south would have called it the Battle of Marion.
    2. The morning call would be horribly loud and fast so people wouldn't sleep through it. For formations, it would be two loud beats kind of like a heart beat. The two beats would signify "line up." For meals, it would be a soft soft drumroll.
    3. I think there should have been a rule such as this because a lot of the drummers were really young and they were just trying to help out.
    4. I don't kids really get anything for their heroism because to me, heroism is like saving someone's life and kids aren't really in those situations.
    5. I think they should use sign language because it could be louder than a rocket launch and you still would receive the message.

  40. 1. The landmark for the battle would be Thomas Park. The name the North would use is The Battle of Thomas' Park and the name the South would use is The Battle of Squaw Creek.

2.The drum beat I would use would be syncipated, complicated, fast, and it would be thunderous. Because it would be complicated and syncipated, it would be hard for the enemy to fake and reuse to trick us. Since it is fast, it would be even harder and it would be loud so it would be heard.

3.i think there SHOULD be a rule to protect drummer boys because they are usually small boys who are innocent and defenceless.

    4. The kind of things kids earn for their heroism is meeting the president, scholarships, and dedications.

    5. I think to communicate we should use pagers, headphones, high-tech walkie talkies, and parachutes.
