"Across Five Aprils"FYI - BACKGROUND
Read Butternuts, Life on the Battlefield, All the Comforts of Home, and Ulysses S. Grant. The reflect on the following questions and respond on the blog. Make sure you proofread and make sure you "sign" your post (no anonymous).
1. Butternuts: Think of resources found in the Union, border states, and the Confederacy. Then, develop a nickname to reflect each region and explain why you created it.
2. Life on the Battlefield: Brainstorm names for temporary housing that might have been built during the Civil War. Create three and explain why they are worthy of the name.
3. All the Comforts of Home: Soldiers were very resourceful and invented what they needed out of necessity. Invent a comfort of home using canvas fabric, tree sap, and/or playing cards.
4. Ulysses S. Grant: Of all of Grant's achievements, what would you say is most important and why?
1.The place of Farmland would be my nickname to name the region. Beacuse of the rich farmland.

3. Rip the canvas fabric in inch strands. Tie them together in diffrent ways to make a ball j=kindof thing. Put it on your bed for confort.
4. I think Ulysses important thing was being a great leader in the war.
1. The Union's nickname would be called Snow Hills because they have a lot of snow up there a lot of the times and there are a lot of hills. The Confederacy's nickname would be called Redneck Alley. I called this region Redneck Alley because that's the type of people in that region. The Border's states nickname would be The Undecided because they don't know where they would go - the North or the South.
ReplyDelete2. Slave Haters Suite-This would be for the white slave drivers that had slaves in the fields working and they didn't care.
The Everybody Motel-This is for the Northeners that had blacks that they don't care about having them with them and like having them there.
Slop Hotel-This is a hotel with many muddy soldiers and others that are muddy and dirty.
3. The canvas fabric would be used for like a rug for the muddy boots. The tree sap and playing cards could be used for like a door or bug net.
4. The most important was being retired and then coming back and having a super army. This is important because if he hadn't came back and led the army, I don't think the Union would've won.
1.The Unions nickname is the confused states because they didn't know if they wanted to be free slave states or slave states.
ReplyDelete2.Bug Nation Hotel because they had to deal with many bugs. Dirt House because there was dirt around everywhere. Blizzard Hotel because the weather is bad sometimes.
3.Use the canvas as a tent and use then use the tree sap to make it stand up and to hold the cards up.
4.Leadership because you need someone who tells people what to do and lead people in how and what to do.

3.you can use the canvas as a tent like thingy and then use the tree sap to hold the card up strait and then it will make a TENT!!!!
4.leadership because you need leadership to lead everything he has to and leadership is really good for people that think they are all that!!
1. The Union's nickname could be the Cropping region because the North has a lot of plains and they grow a lot of crops. The Confederacy's nickname could be the Cotton region because they grown cotton produced by the slaves. The border state's nickname could be Teetor Totter region because they could go either way in choosing to be a free state or a slave state. (?)
ReplyDelete2. Sweaty Restaurant. The soldiers were probably always sweating and stinking because they can't always shower. Muddy Motel. Obviously, when you are lying on the ground and crawling for your life you're going to get a little dirty. Bloody Barn. Soldiers probably have to save people from bleeding to death so they would get other people's blood on them or they could get shot.
3. You could use tree sap for hair gel.
4. Grant's greatest achievement was graduating for West Point Military Academy because I am sure that graduating from a military academy must be very challenging.

3.THE TREE SAP CANVAS BECAUSE YOU PUT SOME OF THE TREE SAP ON PART OF THE CANVAS AND STICK IT TO A TREE AND DO THE SAME THING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CANVAS.
4.GRANT WAS A HEAVY DRINKER AND I'M SURPRISE THAT HE DIDN'T DIE OF ALOHAL POISENING.

ReplyDeleteUnion- Metal workers" Reason- They manufactured metal.
Border States- Metal Worker Nobodys" Reason- They are similar to the North, but couldn't make up their minds.
Confederacy- "Cotton heads" Reason- They grew lots of cotton.

"Rotten wood" Since it is junky and rotten.
"Hobo Worthy Inn" Since a hobo would live in that kind of house
"Bug Bed Room" Since they had bug problems.
All the Comforts of Home
They could use the tree sap to stick the canvas on a flat object such a stump. Then use the cards and play a card game. They could also use the canvas top as a coat and use the tree sap to form a coat to protect from rain.
Ulysses S. Grant
I think it was winning the Civil War. That seems the most important because this country would be A LOT different. Everything else is also important, because if they didn't happen then he might not of won the Civil War.
1."Cannon makers" for the factories in the Union.

"Confused Heads" for the border states because they are in the middle.
2. Cabin's Den, Sweat Lodge, and Torture from Beneath. They are all uncomfortable places.
3. A bed = canvas for the bottom and tree sap to make a hammock, and playing cards to fill holes.
4. Civil War General - it shows someone who starts out with nothing and rises to something.
1.The Great is the union because they are large and strong. The Few is the south because they are smaller then the North.

1.south= Farmer's pardise ,because the south has a lot of farms and not of bustling cities.

North= Yankee steelers, because their nickname is the yankees by the south and they work a lot in the factory.

The pit, because people think of pit as something dark and bad.
Leftover inn, because people would have leftover food,clothes and equipment.

1. Butternuts: The Union's nickname would be the Diverse Population because they have both farming and industrial things in there states. The Confederate states would be Down To Earth because from the time they could walk they were planting and farming and raising cattle. The border states would be Neutral States because they don't know which country to go with, so they just stayed neutral.
ReplyDelete2. Life on the Battlefield: The first house would be Harsh Inn in the winter because the winters were harsh in the north, so they had to make a strong and sturdy home. The second one would be Penguin's Cabin because it would be shaped like an igloo, but it would be made out of wood since they didn't have block ice. The third one would be I Heard That because this house would be for in the the middle of summer so there would be holes in the walls so you could air out the place if it gets to hot.
3. All the Comforts of Home: I would use the tree sap to sick the card together to make any thing like a house or a ship.
4. Ulysses S. Grant: I think the best achievement would be being the best general that made his army almost unbeatable.
1.for my nick name for the border states was the ponders becuse they could not make up there minds on the war.
ReplyDelete2.jack frost's inn. I choose this name because of how coold it would be in the cabins. misketo's fest inn I think this is a fitting name because misketos were a plenty during the war. pigs mud hole is a fitting name because the cabins were probly vary mudy .
3.You can make a hameke by using the tree sap to atche each side to a tree.
4.His greatest acement was going from a farmers son to president of the united states. I think this becuse even now it is almost imposible to go from such a low standing to the united states president.
1. The Union could be called the Plenties because they have plenty of resources and soldiers. If you compared the North and the South, you would see a big difference in supplies. For the Border States, I would call them the inbetweenies because they are in between the Union and the Confederacy, and they are undecided about wether they want to join the Union or the Confederacy. For the Confederacy, I would call them the Labor Loons because they believe 100% in slavery and that 100% should be 0%.
ReplyDelete2. Three names that I would give a battlefield camp would be probably Bayonets and Bones, The Burning Plains, or Battlefield Boulevard.
3. I would make a rain coat. Just cut the canvas to your size and use tree sap as a glue if needed. If you want pockets, just use some tree sap and some cards to make pockets and use some more tree sap to glue pockets on the inside of the rain coat.
4. One of his greatest achievements, I think, would be his quality of leadership. He had this talent of being a good military leader, and it really showed.
Question 1)Union-Butterfingers, because in some Union areas they had a great supply of butternut trees witch was what they used to dye their homespune clothes. So if they made a mistake people made a mistake they could call them "Butterfingers" because that's what some work with. The Confederacy's nickname could be; Confident Confederate's... They could be name this because they were a strong and confident group of states.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2) One name could be Paralysis Prison.. It would be a good name because Paralysis was a big problem during the time of the Civil War. Another name could be Bull Run Bounty Bar/Motel.. Since they built little houses in the Battle of Bull Run during the winter. So when they need a day of rest and to get away from the cold. And lastly you could call one of these houses would be Miserable Motel.. You could build a bunch of house together and have around 10 to 15 people living in one little strand of houses with little resources.
Question 3) You could build yourself a little blanket.. First you would lay the canvas down and cut it in half. Take one half and then spread tree sap over it and then lay the other half on top of it so you kinda get double warmth. Then you can use the playing cards to play war with your buddies=)
Question 4) I think his most important achievement was that he made his war un-beatable.. That was really important because that is really important to have a army that people knew of guessed who could win.
1.Union:shuners. because they used blockades to keep the south out.

Confederacy:rebels. they have 112,000 soldiers in war. they all should be called the rebels.
2. wall in the field. because if the battles got to the homes they would just be a wall in the wayc randomly in the field.
night mare. well its during war. and i would have night mares iif i knew that there was a battle going on.
turn back hotel: well i was thinken that there is usually a warning to turn back when there is some thing dangerious.
3. first. cut the fabric in half and put some cards on one pice of fabric. put the other pice of fabric on top of the cards and use the tree sap to glue the fabric to gether and you just mad a pillow.
4. i would have to say that when hegraduated from the millitary academy. becuase he wouldn't know what to do during war.
1. The nickname I chose for the north is factoryans since they had a good industry.

3. Jacks crazy card game, for the union solders when they are camping out.
4. When grant proved to have a gift for leader ship, combination of daring, tenacity, and ruthlessness toward his own men making his army almost unbeatable.
1. For the Union states, I would give them the name 'Demanders' because they want their way, they want the South back with the Union, and they want it now.
ReplyDeleteFor the Border stars I'd give them the name 'Teasers' because when you tease a dog, you act like you'll let them get something, then not give a toy/treat to them.
For the Confederacy I would give them the name 'Judas' because they betrayed their counterpart, who thought they could trust the South.
2. I would name a cabin either 'Dirty Snake' 'Bed Bug Bedtime' or 'Bull Doo'. (As in poop)
3. I would use the Canvas Bag as a picnic-like blanket and play cards with my fellow soldiers. It would remind me of rainy days with my dad.
4. I think the most important thing Ulysseus S Grant ever did was his leadership in the Civil War. His leadership and rules made his men almost unbeatable.
1. The Union: Metalmouth's because of their large amount of railroads. Border Sates: Balanced rocks because of the Border States indecisiveness. Confederacy: Cotton brains because of their large amount of cotton produced.

3. Stick the canvas cloth together with tree sap and use it as a backpack to carry your stuff.
4. He quickly became a brigadier was his most important achievement to me because even though he was a drunk he rose up out of that and succeeded.
1. Confederacy: The Generals because they had better military leaders. Border States: the undecided because they don't know what side to choose. Union: Factory line because they have a lot of factory's.

1. The North's nickname is the free worker states because they let slaves be free and they produced the most goods of the country. The border state's nickname is the indecisive states because they can't decide whether or not to be free or slave. South's nickname would be the slave owners because they hold slaves.

1. The Union should be called honest Abe's because Abraham Lincoln was the president of the Union. The Confederacy should be called cheap merchants because they get there crops for free from the slaves work. The border states should be called the Manderscheilds because Jacob Manderscheid can never decide what to do just like the border states.
ReplyDelete2. One would be Elite 9 because the Super 8 is a bad hotel so I just changed the words to a synonym. Another would be Montezuma's Revenge because in Mexico if you drink the water you will get sick and it is called Montezuma's revenge. The last one would be The Lincoln Log Inn because of the toy. Which would mean that the cabin wouldn't be put together well.
3. I would make a Samurai hat out of cards and tree sap.
4. I think the most important achievement would be graduating from military academy because all of the other achievements he got were thanks to his graduation from the military academy.

South: Psycho Slave Holders, because all they wanted was to have their slaves and do work for them.

Moldy Motel: I assume that the soldiers are very gross and would create mold.
Disease Inn: Most of soldiers had diseases!
3. You could use the fabric as a blanket and use the tree sap and glue the cards on the blanket to make a unique sticky blanket!
4. Becoming president, because he had great leadership skills and made a great influence and change in the Civil War and Mexican War.
1. I would call the union the slaveholders because they were all for slavery and believed that african-americans had no rights. The confederacy would be the do-it-yoursefer's because they don't believe in slavery so they did all their farming their self. The boarder states are the undecided's because they could go one way or the other.

One name would be the home away from home because that is exactly what it is. another one would be motel bull run because that was the name of the war and motels normally aren't as nice as hotels and a log cabin isn't exactly good accomadations. I would name one the hole in the wall because that is what it is.

4. I think his greatest acomplishment is taking action in the Civil war after already fighting in previous wars. That is really brave.
1. ~South- Heaven for the farmers. Because there are so much farm land and good soil...lots of oppurotunities(or how ever you spell it) for farmers.

2. Workers Inn because of the workers from each state was very common, HarshTime Inn because there was lots of desseis, and Seconds Best Inn, people had lots of leftover equipment and food.
3. Putting 2 cards together so you have some on both sides like the border states.
4. I think the most important of them are millitary accademy.

3.I would put the tree sap on the fabric and make it into a bag by folding it in a bag form.
4.I think his biggest achievement is he was a amazing leader. Why this is important is because you need a responsible leader to be incharge

3.I would make a blanket and put sap on it so then the blanket would never fall off when i'm sleeping. :D

The border states nickname is confusing decisions because to decide if they should be a free state or slave state.
2.Three names for log cabins are:
NIght mare manor because the war is a night mare.
shooting inn because its a war and they shoot eachother. Shiverme inn because it was cold since it was winter.
3. You can glue the cards to make some small boxes to store anumition.
4.HIs ruthlessness towards his army because it made them unbeatalble.
1.North is the Freedom Ringers because they are trying to inform people and persuade them to going them to set the slaves free. South would be the pushers because they try and force the to go in to slavery by threatening them to succed or fight. the border states would be called the splits because the cant choose

2.Broken because it would be for the injured soldiers. Searching because it would be a hidden homes in like tall grasses so he other people couldn't find them. Also the tree house because it would be hidden in at the top of trees so they will be able to spy on the soldiers they are against.
3.I would use tree sap and cards and glue a lot of cards together and make a hanger or a shelf to put their clothes on and items on.
4.I think Grant's best achievement was that he cared for his country so much he but his drinking problems aside and he helped fight and train for the war for is country.
1.The nickname for the Union could be the Wanters; they always wanted everything right away and easily.
ReplyDeleteThe nickname for the border states could be the Confused Quadruplets; there were four of them and they couldn't decide to go to the north or south.
The nickname for the south could be the Fighters; they had good war leaders and they were over confident.
2. Three names for temporary houses are Boulder Bank, Tank Tree House, and Titanium. They are all worthy names because they all stand for a sturdy hard object that can't be taken down easily.
3. Something I would invent would be a house flag. You could spread out the fabric then spread the sap on the back of the cards. Then you can place the cards however you want to make a design and then use some more sap then stick it to the wall outside. Wala, you have a flag.
4. I think Grant's best achievement would be leading as Brigadier General because he help our country when the war and he saved many innocent lives.

2. living in misery hotel, might not be great but its livable
3. hole in the ground, can work and is bare minimum

stick the playing cards using sap into two long strips, cross the strips and sap on the fabric u use more fabric for a blanket the ball up some fabric for a pillow, then cut and glue fabric for clothes. and lay out fabric so you have a softer land. with remaining you can make a flag
4. Ulysses S. Grant: Of all of Grant's achievements, what would you say is most important and why? he reenlisted and despite his drinking rose to the rank of brigader general. i think it is cuz he could rise above even the toughest things, like addiction.
1. Union- Weaklings because they were so weak some talked about creating a separate state.

2.Shot down, because a lot of people were injured. Slave stay inn, Because there were a lot of slaves during that time. Minie, A "store" were you could get these bullets at.
3. Use the cards as the base to hold it up, take fabric and sap to glue the cards and fabric together, you could use cards to make a table and a bed and use fabric for a pillow and blanket.
4.I think the most important would have to be that he went to military academy because without knowledge on it he probably wouldn't have been sucha great leader knowing what to do.
1. The Union's nickname could be a agricultural paradise. Because the union is an agricultural paradise it has good mineral rich soil good for farmers. The Confederacy's nickname could be the Cotton slave owners because the are pro slavery and the are cotton farmers. The Boarder States could be the Tight brothers because if you like your brother one day the next you could hate them and go agenst them.

3. All the Comforts of Home my invention is the Tree Bomb You take pine pitch and put it in the canvas then put a rolled up card in and light it on fire then throw it and it will blow up:)
4. Ulysses S. Grant most important achivements. I think it would be his abilitty to lead a regiment of the millitary he was a natural leader and his leadership really showed.
1. The Union is nicked named the FREEDOM EAGLES because they wont freedom for the slaves yaa. The Confederacy will be called the STRONG ARMS because they are strong. The border states would be named the NOT SO SHER because there not so shere.

3. You could use the canvous fabric to make a pillow and blanket and make a tent with a tree sap.

1. I would give the Union the nickname the Fenced Gardeners because they are into crops, and they also put a blockade because they didn't want to South in their territory.
ReplyDeleteI would call the border states the Butterfingers because they couldn't choose a side, and the North and South both wanted them, but couldn't get a hold of them.
I would call the Confederacy the Fluffers because they were very in to cotton and cropping it.
2. I'd call them:
Fantasy Fright, because many things in war can be frightful and some of the things you see might be unbelievable.
Disaster Inn. because something very bad might have happened during the time they were fighting and making the cabin.
Safety hotel, because they are in shelter instead of outside where the war is.
3. you could use playing cards and stick them together, and put the canvas fabric around it to make extra shoes. Or you can make a rug by using the canvas fabric.
4. His biggest achievement was probably his strength in leadership. Leadership helped him make the war un-beatable.

4. the most important thing is going to school. because if he did not go to school he would have not known what to do durring the war.
1. Union states i would have too say cropie because they grow a lot of crops. Border states i would have too say the supporters because they didn't no who the support the south or the north. Confederacy i would have too name the confederacy states The recker's because they wanted too stay the slaved states and it caused more fights between states.

1. The Union would be known as the indust because of their great industrial power. The Confederacy would be known as the back roads because they would know their land better than the Union. The Border States would be known as the SwIt because of Switzerland and Italy. Because Switzerland remained neutral and Italy switched sides constantly.

Another would be called the Rat Inn because they would probably be running into rodent problems. The last would be called the Hunger Inn because that would be the best place to go and eat when you hungry.
3. I would use the sap to glue the cards to the canvas so that it would be like a quilt from home.
4. I think that Ulysses S. Grants best accomplishment was having an almost unbeatable army because that means that as being a leader, he brought many good things to the army.
