8th Grade SOS #16

After reading the excerpt below from Harriet Beecher Stowe's concluding words in "Uncle Tom's Cabin," reflect and write on the following questions:
  • What arguments did Stowe put forth against slavery?
  • What audience was she trying to reach with her message?
  • Women in the nineteenth century could not vote, so why did Stowe make a point of addressing mothers?
"The writer has given only a faint shadow, a dim picture, of the anguish and despair that are, at this very moment, riving thousands of hearts, shattering thousands of families, and driving a helpless and sensitive race to frenzy and despair. There are those living who know the mothers whom this accursed traffic has driven to the murder of their children; and themselves seeking in death a shelter from woes more dreaded than death … "And you, mothers of America … I beseech you, pity the mother who has all your affections, and not one legal right to protect, guide, or educate, the child of her bosom! … I beseech you, pity those mothers that are constantly made childless by the American slave-trade! And say, mothers of America, is this a thing to be defended, sympathized with, passed over in silence? Do you say that the people of the free state have nothing to do with it, and can do nothing? Would to God this were true! But it is not true. The people of the free states have defended, encouraged, and participated; and are more guilty for it, before God, than the South, in that they have not the apology of education or custom. "If the mothers of the free states had all felt as they should, in times past, the sons of the free states would not have been the holders, and, proverbially, the hardest masters of slaves … "… You pray for the heathen abroad; pray also for the heathen at home. And pray for those distressed Christians whose whole chance of religious improvement is an accident of trade and sale; from whom any adherence to the morals of Christianity is, in many cases, an impossibility, unless they have given them, from above, the courage and grace of martyrdom."

  1. 1.That slavery is causing murder
    Tearing families apart
Driving a race to a frenzy and despair
    2. Her message was probably addressed to mothers.
    3. Because by addressing mothers she can grab the attention of a motherly instinct and hope that by having that motherly intuition it will open some peoples eyes. By talking about mothers and children people will become a little more vulnerable and more open to accept things and listen.

    1. That no one can take things away from peoples' rights. That anyone of any color can have anything they want if they can get it.

    2. Slave drivers.

    3. So people could see that without women voting, it is not a full population vote so it would be unfair because I'm sure women had favorite candidates they wanted to vote for but can't because of the law. So when women could vote the presidential races got more accurate and their were closer vote totals than before.

  7. 1. Stowe said that slavery was for mothers who didn't care about there children. Stowe puts pity on the mothers that don't educate or teach their children how to do house work and other stuff than having other people do it for them.
    2. I think she was trying to reach the slave owners that are mothers and have a lot of children.
    3. I think that she made a point addressing mothers because she was a mother herself and didn't own any slaves and was teaching her children the how do be a mother when the time comes.

  8. In the argument she is saying that the slaves are being separated as families and are in despair. She says that the North is more guilty than the South because the North is not standing up while the South don't have the education to.
She is trying to reach women to stand against slavery and to help out those who need help.
I think Stowe made a point in addressing women because she is trying to get them to help persuade others that can vote to vote for anti- slavery.

  9. #1. Arguments that Stowe put forth about slavery are that colored women should have all of the rights as white women do. They might have things in common, but they are not able to educate or protect their child. That would be very hard for a mother to lose their child because of slavery.
#2. I think she is reaching out to all of the women no matter what their race is and also trying to capture the attention of the government without saying her speech directly to them.
#3. She addressed the mothers because she says that they have rights too. These rights that she is talking about isn't about voting, but it still shows that women can take part in having rights too.

  11. Question1) Some arguments Stowe put against slavery was that she was accusing the free states guilty of this act. And she is saying that they defended, participated, and encouraged this.

Question 2) I think she was more trying to grab the attention of mothers in the U.S. and the free states.

Question 3) She made the point of addressing mothers so that the mothers would protest. She thought that if they won that they would get more privaliges as a women to do more things. Some examples are: Vote(of course), become teachers, and go to school.

She also was trying to reach the mothers of America.
Women in the nineteenth century could not vote, so why did Stowe make a point of addressing mothers? Stowe made a point of addressing women because the Africans children would get put into slavery and the women here in America also had children. She thought the women in America would sympathize the fact that most slaves were taken from their mothers.

3.Women in the nineteenth century could not vote, so why did Stowe make a point of addressing mothers? She made the choice of adressing mothers because she felt they could relate to most women. I also think she adressed them because I think she felt that they were stronger than most women and they could have more bravery to stand up to the government. Being strong women I think she called to mothers to bring atention to how slave women treat there children and if there were free states and women's right there would be a change in that.

  30. What arguments did Stowe put forth against slavery?

What audience was she trying to reach with her message?

Women in the nineteenth century could not vote, so why did Stowe make a point of addressing mothers?
she made a point of addressing mothers because they should be treated equal, not worse. in reality they have a much harder time than men do because often they have more responsibility over the children. some mothers are getting so stressed that it is causing them to murder their own children.

  31. Stowe put forth many good arguments about slavery. One of her strongest points was comparing the white mothers to the black mothers. She continually asked how they would feel, if they no control over where their children would go, it was all in the luck of the slave trade. The priority group she was targeting were the mothers of the North. She was doing this by trying to make them feel an insane amount of guilt, and make them try to relate as to how it would feel to have your children taken away from you. She has targeted the women, even though they cannot vote, because of this gives the women a chance to speak out, finally. Most women trying to abolish slavery later became campaigners for Women's rights. This was a major stepping stone for all women, finally being able to speak out.

  35. 1. There is no reason to have slavery because it isn't giving the children a chance make a change, or even grow up to be something big. They just will have to work for someone else and not have a chance to shine in there own light.

    2. I think she was trying to get all the mothers and women in America.

    3. She made a point in addressing mothers because no child could vote and most women had families. She was also trying to reach out to the families so that the children knew about it and they would and could go against it also.

    3. She was reaching out to Mothers because by doing so, she had control of motherly instinct. It would also show support to the slaves and give them hope because women are very inspirational.
