The Election of 1824 was the first election where the winner of the popular vote did not become the President.  Subsequently, “J. Q. Adams who can write” squared off against “Andy Jackson who can fight” in the Election of 1828, in one of the most bitter campaigns in American history.

Click the following link (http://archive.fairvote.org/e_college/controversial.htm#1824) and read about other controversial elections in American History.  Then, return to the blog and COMPARE/CONTRAST the Election of 1824 to one of the other elections you read about.  Remember to state how they were alike and why as well as how they were different and why.  Use complete sentences, proper writing conventions, and PROOFREAD!

  1. The election of 1824 and 2000. The same thing that happened was that the popular vote winner didn't become president. The Supreme Court made the choice of which person got to be president in the 2000 election. In 1824 the House of Representatives made the choice. John Quincy Adams won the popular vote by a landslide in the 1824 election, but in 2000 Gore won by very slim.

  2. Comparing and Contrasting the Election of 1824 between Adams and Jackson and the Election of 1872 between Greeley and Grant.
Both of the Elections had to add "extra time". A winner couldn't be just announced because the Election of 1824 resulted in the House of Representatives voting, and the Election of 1872 resulted in 4 minor candidates to be substituted.
In the Election of 1824, it was the first time where the candidate with the most popular vote didn't win. In the Election of 1872, One of the candidates died (Greeley). In the Election of 1824, Adams was accused of "corrupt bargain" by making Clay his secretary of state in return for votes. Both Elections are remembered in history because in 1824 the "corrupt bargain" scandal was huge, and in 1872 Grant was said to have beat Greeley 286-0.

  3. The other election I did was the was 2000 election.
The two elections were similar because both popular votes didn't decide the race. Both losing canidates didn't take the lose very well. They're different because Jackson won the popular vote, but didn't win the election. Bush won the popular and he won the race.

  4. The presidential election of 1800 was between Jefferson and Adams. The electors didn't do one for vice president and one for president. They just chose two names. There was no majority within the Electoral College, so the final vote was sent to the House of Representatives. They decided Jefferson for president and Burr for vice president. This compares to the presidential election of 1824 because there was no majority again in the Electoral College and once again the votes were handed to the House of Representatives. This time in the election, though, the most popular votes did not win the presidency. Instead Adams became president and Clay became the vice president.

I chose Tilden and Hayes. The alikes were they were both waiting on the final votes to decide; the one that looked that they were going to win didn't win; and it was for the presidential position. The differences were that in the Tilden-Hayes race, it didn't come down to the House of Representatives to vote, it came down to the electoral votes; during J. Q. Adams and Andrew Jackson, you had the Democratic-Republicans and the National Republicans and in the Tilden-Hayes race, it was the Republicans and the Democrats;and there was no corrupt bargaining in the Tilden-Hayes race.

  6. The Presidentail election in 1800 was between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr they both won the majority of the votes and all of the democratic republicans voted faithfully casting two votes each on for Jefferson and one for Burr.Thomas Jefferson and Aaron burr ended up with the same amount of the votes and the vote ended up at a tie.The fedrealist party considered Burr to be less than an evil that jefferson so they tried to rally support of burr rather than jefferson but burr refused to endourse jefferson.the vote of 1824 is the same because they both talk about the votes and why they became the prsident.

  7. Andrew Jackson had 99 votes, but only had 7 votes from the state house of representatives.Andrew Jackson was a war hero and Andrew Jackson should have been president instead of John Quincy Adams.

John Quincy Adams had 84votes and the house of representatives gave him 13 votes, just because his dad was a president, and he is just following his father's footsteps.

THOMAS JEFFERSON IS A DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICAN, WHO HAS A RIGHT WAY TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY AND IT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN JOHN ADAMS.

JOHN ADAMS IS A FEDRALIST WHO WENT INTO WAR WITH FRANCE. HE WASN'T A EVERY GOOD PRESIDENT AT THE TIME.

  8. 1824 compared to 2000:
In both elections the popular voted winner was not elected. Both amount on both sides of the Electoral Colleges were very close; Bush 271 and Gore 266 and Jackson 99 electoral votes, and Adams 84 votes.

    1824 different to 2000:
Rumor of illegal voters was being spread. Were in 1824 there was no problems with voting, but the main problem was that the House of Representatives still had to vote.

  9. I looked at the 1999 election aginst Goroge W. Bush and Al Gore. What that election had in common with Andrew Jackson and John Adams is. Both did not dicide in the winner by popularity. Both had one candate droped out. What they had in different was for one thing they were in very different time periods of time. Rules were problely played out differently.

  10. The election in 1824 and 1888 was when the most popular vote did not become president. There was also no majority in either of the elections.
In 1888 the election Cleveland favored the southern states, and the southern states favored lowly in tariffs. In the South tariffs were unpopular so Cleveland had many favored South states. In the 1824 election there were many votes from popularity for Jackson but in the end he wanted to be the man of the people not the government.

  11. I compared the 1800 election and the 1824 election.
Some comparisons of the two elections are that John Adams was the father of John Quincey Adams, both of the Adams won the election, both of the elections to become president were decided by the house of representatives, and both candidates from both elections had a HUGE rivalry. Some contrasts between the two elections are that in 1824, this was the first election that the candidate did not win by popular vote. This is also an election where Andrew Jackson declared a "corrupt bargain." Some contrasts in 1800 compared to the ones in 1824 are that electors cast two different votes to their party without specifying which ones were president and vice-president votes. They now cast two separate votes for president and vice-president.

  12. I am the comparing 1800 and 1824. I will start with there differences. well first of they have different people trying out for presidency. one have 32 people going out and the other has 4 people going out.
comparing things they have in comin. they both didn't win by popularity votes. one of them became president, the other became vice president.

  13. Jackson vs. Adams
The election of 1824 was a large debate. When the popular votes were taken, Jackson won a slight plurality of the popular votes. However, when all four candidates received there Electoral Votes, none of them was a majority. Because of this, the votes went to the House of Representatives. Henry Clay was kicked off since the House is only allowed to vote on the top three candidates. Adams asked Henry to help him with the election by ralling people for him. This was know as the "Corrupt Bargain" and was a dark cloud for Adams.
    Harrison vs. Cleveland
The election of 1888 was another voting that the popular vote did not win. Cleveland won the popular votes while Harrison won the Electoral votes. Cleveland won by the 6 southern states over the issue of tariffs.

  14. The second election I chose to write about was between Greeley and Grant.Unlike the election of 1824 this election did not need to go to the house of represetives. And like the election of 1824 the winer did not truly win for Greeley died befor the end of the election so Grant did not trly beat him. also with the election of 1824 Addems aprently made a deal with Henry Clay

  15. I compared 1824 to 2000. Both elections the winner didn't have the most popular votes. The elections both had a candidates that were the sons of former presidents. And the sons of the former presidents won.The difference was that for the 1824 election the court decided. But for the 2000 election they had to recount the votes from California because the voting counters didn't work right.

  16. Comparing the Election of 1824 between Adams and Jackson and the election between Bush and Gore.
Adams&Jackson: These were the first election that the most popular persons votes did not become president. Andrew Jackson and won the vote ,but leading (John Quincy- 1824 and George W. Bush-2000) The Supreme Court made the choice of which of these people got to be president in the 2000 election. As well in the 1824 election the House of Representatives made the choice. John Quincy Adams won the popular vote by a huge amount 1824, and the 2000 Bush won by very small amount:)

  17. I compared the 1824 election to the 2000 election. They were both alike because the most popular vote winners did not win. The two running candidates were also both former sons of presidents. The difference was the in the 2000 election they had to recount the votes from California, and Florida was the key state with 6 million votes. The 1824 election did not have to recount any votes unlike the 2000 election.

  18. I compared 1800 to the 1824 because both of the elections did win a very popular vote, but the winner of the election was not seen as a popular candidate but won. Also both of the presidents had children and also won presidency when they ran for president.

  19. I compared the elections of 1824 and 2000. One similarity is that both elections had a runner that won the popular vote but did not elected to the presidency. Another similarity was that both elections had a person running that had a father that was also a president. One difference was that the 1824 election didn't have a "spoiler" which means that the 2000 election had someone that received votes that the Gore party believed could have gone to Gore. Another difference was that the 2000 election ended with Gore publicly withdrew from the election where as in the 1824 election, there was mudslinging from both sides to the end.

  20. I compared the 1824 election to the 1836 election. In the 1824 election Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but not the electoral vote. In the 1836 election Martin Van Buren won the popular and electoral vote. In the 1836 election Buren's main competition was the Whig party, who wanted to win majority throughout the nation and gain presidency, but he didn't. In the 1824 elections John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson were rivals.

  21. i compared 1824 to 2000. Both winners did not have the mos popular votes. There also was a son of a former president running in both. Both of the sons won. But in 1824 the House of Representatives chose the winner. In 2000 they had a recount because there was confusion in who people voted for.

  22. I'm comparing the elections of 1824 and 2000. The popular vote winner in both of them did not win. In both of them former president's sons were running for president, and both of the sons won. In the election of 2000 they though there was illegal voting, while in 1824 there was no thought of illegal voting. In 2000 they decided who would win by giving Florida's votes to George Bush, and in 1824 The electoral court decided

  23. 1824 and 2000 Election

Compare:Both of the popular vote winners didn't win the election. Jackson and Gore had the most votes but didn't win.

Contrast: The 2000 election resulted in court battles over the votes.
Jackson called the whole thing a "Corrupt Bargain" and spent 4 years campaigning on how the election was stolen from him.

  24. I chose the 1888 election, which like the election between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, the candidate who won the popularity vote did not win the election. They both won by a very slim margin. A difference is that Harrison won the majority, unlike John Quincy Adams. Another difference is that Cleveland was a former president, running for another term, unlike either of the men running in 1824.

  25. I compared the 1824 to the 2000 elections.

They are same because both Bush and Adams farther were both once presidents. Also the winner of the popular vote did not win the election. There was a also allegations that could have made the out come different.

They were different because they used electronic votes. They had lots of recounting votes. Also Florida was not a state yet.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The Elections of 2000 and 1824 both of the winner with the popular vote did not become president. For the election of 1824, it was because none of the four running received a majority of the votes. Because of that, the House Of Representatives chose who would be president. In 2000, the problem was..voter fraud. Unclear ballads, uncounted votes, illegal roads blocks were all rumors about what happened. They recounted every ballad and vote, and the decision was made by the Supreme court.

  27. I compared the election of 1872 and 1824. One of the differences was that in the election of 1824 and 1872 was that Grant won the popular vote and the election but Adams lost the popular vote but won the election. Another difference is that at the end of the election Greeley died and they split his electoral votes evenly with the minor candidates. In both of the elections the electoral votes did not make a difference because Greeley died and nobody in the election of 1824 got the majority of the votes.

  28. One thing that election 1824 and election 1888 have in common is when they voted it wasn't about the popular vote. So if you got the lowest amount you would become president. One thing that is different about the election of and 1824 and the election of 1888 is in the 1824 election there was only one state that broke the tie. So if this state had not voted for the one who won they wouldn't have won. Now in the election of 1888 there were 6 states that broke the tie between the two going for president.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I chose to compare the 1824 and 2000 elections. In both of the elections the person who won the popular votes didn't become president. Both parties who lost thought that it was a corrupted win and that it was unfair. The differences between these elections is that in the 2000 election they recounted the votes. And in 1824 they didn't recount the votes. Also in 1825 Henry Clay dropped out because he became ill, but in 2000 Nadar didn't drop out. And people say if he had then Gore would've won instead of Bush.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The 2000 election and the 1824 election were alike because in both elections the winner of the popular vote did not become the President. Also in both people thought the votes were wrong or cheated, because Clay helped Adams in 1824 and in 2000 the people from Florida and Missouri had rumors of unclear ballots and uncounted votes.
In the ways they were different, in the 2000 election, is that in the end Gore did hide his displeasure at the Supreme Court’s ruling, and Andrew Jackson did. After Adams Presidency he won again in 1828. President Bush did not get re-elected.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I compared the 1824 election and the 2000 election.
Alike: Neither of the popular votes won the election. Both of the winning campaigners were sons of former presidents.
Different: People believed if Ralph Nader, a losing campaigner, had dropped out of the race, then Gore would've won. In the 2000 election, they had to recount the votes because voters thought some votes weren't counted, and there were allegations of voter fraud. A Federalist won the 1824 election, while a Republican won the 2000 election.

  32. I compared 1824 to 2000. Both winners of the popular vote did not win the vote. both elections George W. Bush and John Q. Adams had fathers who try running for president. The difference was that in 1824 the house of representatives decided and in 2000 they only recounted the votes

  33. Vs/Vs
    1824/2000
    Alikes:
I compared 1824 to 2000. In these elections, the popular vote was not elected as president. Also, they believed that for certain reasons the winner of the election was unfair and if so and so would have done this they they would have won.
    Differences:
in the election of 1824, the looser protested in his loss for four years, where gore did not do this. Also, the amount of how many more votes that the popular winner got differed. The election of 1824 has about 40,000 more where the election of 2000 had many more than this. But this could be because now more people can vote than they could beck then.

  34. I compared the election of 1824 to 2000. These elections were the same because they didn't pick the winner of the election. It was also the same because they had unfair ballots They were different because they had to recount the votes and the other one didn't. Also an election that occurred was that the highest votes didn't win. It was called the "Corrupt Bargain".

  35. I'm comparing and contrasting the election of 1824 between John Q. Adams and Andrew Jackson and the election of 1800 between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. some comparisons is that John Quincy Adams and John Adams are related and they both one the election. Both elections were chosen by the house of representatives .Contrast were that voters never chose who was vice president and who was president, they just chose two names because of this Jefferson and burr were casted the same amount of votes. Now you chose to specific votes for vice-president and president.

  36. I am comparing the election of 1800 to 1824.
A comparison I found was both John Adams and John Q. Adams both won the the election the first time. Also they both lost the second term election. Both candidates of 1800 and 1824 were huge rivals. In 1800, election votes were taken to the Supreme Court. In 1824, Clay and Adams made a deal that made Clay Secretary of State and gave Adams Clay's electoral votes. In both cases, there was a feeling of someone being cheated.

  37. The two elections I compared were the election of 1824 and the election of 2000. Some things that were the same were that the most popular person, the person who received the most votes, didn't become president. Both elections had other candidates who didn't get very many votes. Some differences were that in the 1824 election, Jackson spent four years campaigning and telling people how the election was stolen from him while Gore just got over it. Another difference was Jackson became a president later on but Gore never did.

  38. I did 1824 and 2000
alike: the popular vote didn't win in both.
difference: Jackson said the election was stolen from him because of a "corrupt bargain." and the election came down to some one dropping out of the race.
alike: both elections had sons of former presidents
difference: Jackson still became a presidents but gore didn't.

  39. The compared to is 1888 and 1824. in 1888 the peopel who where running were harrison and Cleveland.the things they have in common is that they both jackson and cleveland both won the Electoral vote, but they both did not get it. clevended and out of there votes harrison and adams won by 37,150 dollors.
there differences are that jacson and adams did have a majority of the Electoral votes like harrison and cleveland. both of jackson and adams are republicans. and cleveland was the first democart who was elected since before the civil war!

  40. One reason they are the same is that the man with the most popular vote did not win. Also that they had to go to a form of government in order to end the race. The reason they are different is that the Gore, Bush race ordered a recount and the Jackson, Adams race didn't. Also there were four candidates in the 1824 election but in the 2000 election there were three.
