Weekly History and Geography - 34

You are to report for duty on a German U-boat.  Your task is to become well-versed on the following battle tactics at: http://www.uboataces.com/history-tactics.shtml
The Wolf Pack
Intercepting Convoys
Surfaced Attacks
Submerged Attacks
Evasive Tactics
Deck Gun Attacks
Remaining Invisible

Then return to the blog and summarize as well as reflect on your training.

1.  Which tactic did you find most interesting?  Why?
2.  What three speeds could convoys travel?
3.  A U-boat’s best defense is concealment. But once this is blown, what is the next best recourse (thing to do)?
4.  In U-boat school, commanders are guided by the principle, “He who sees first, has won!”.   What do YOU think that means?
5.  What is a “Rudeltaktik"?  Why do YOU think this was an effective U-boat tactic?

  1. 1.The Wolf Pack Tactic, because once you get the signal to attack you can use any tactic you want.

2.The speeds are slow, medium or fast.

3.When their cover is blown their next best recourse is to dive immediately.

    4. Because once you have found the enemy's ship you can now attack them and take down their ship.

5.The Wolf Pack tactic, they can use any tactic once they get the signal.

  2. 1. U-boat deck gun attacks.
    2. slow 4 to 6 knots, medium 7 to 9 knots, and fast 10 to 12 knots.
    3. To dive immediately is the next best recourse
    4. If you spot the enemy first you have the option of a sneak attack.

  3. 1. Deck gun
    2. Slow = 4 to 6 knots, medium = 7 to 9 knots, fast = 10 to 12 knots
    3. The best defense is the torpedo, but when blown they will get the Deck gun people.
    4. I think that means that when you see the things around the other side you find the way to beat them.
    5. I think that it was bad because it messed up the ship.

    2. slow medium or fast.

3.The next best resource is to dive fast.

4.I think it means that when you spot something good you already know you've you have won and that you have a better chance of winning

5.Because once u have a signal they use it to find other ships.

    2. Slow: 4-6 knots, medium: 7-9 knots, fast: 10-12 knots.
    3. Diving- they dive down to try to be protected from the enemy.
    4. I think that it means that if they are not spotted, then they can strike with suprise and win.
    5. It is the wolf pack idea. The U-boats get together and strike. If one goes down then the others can still fight and they can take ships down faster.

If you sight the enemy first, you have a better chance at surviving because you can attack first.
    5. What is a “Rudeltaktik"? Why do YOU think this was an effective U-boat tactic?
It's called Wolf Pack tactic. Because it could counter the British convoys.

  10. 1.Remaing Invisible because you usally can't be found and that's why it's called Remaning Invisible. I also liked Submerged Attacks because they come up to attack then go back down. The last one I like is Evasive Tactics because if concealment fails, then they dive really, really fast.

    2.Slow = 4-6 knots, Medium = 7-9 knots, and Fast = 10-12 knots!

3.To dive as quickly as possible to not be found.

4.I think that means that you see them and they don't see you then you have first attack and you strike and possibly sink their ship.

5.A Rudeltatik is when a group of ships sail together as a group and under the protection of escort warships to take down enemy ships.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1.That Wolf pack also is called "Rudelitatik" in German.
    2. Convoys can go Slow (4 to 6) medium (7 to 9) and fast (10 to 12).
    3. I couldn't find what is the next best thing.
    4. I think the person who sees the enemy 1st has an advantage of all the others.

    2. Slow= 4 to 6 knots, medium= 7 to 9 knots, fast= 10 to 12 knots.
    3. Dive.
    4. If you see the enemy first, you get first strike.
    5. Wolf pack. They have to get a signal to attack.

  14. 1.some of the tactics are the wolf boat tactic.
2.the 1st is 4 to 6 knots and the next is medium and its 7 to 9 knots and the next is fast is 10 to 12 knots.
3.I is the deck gun people.
4.I think its meaning when u have to find different attacks

    5.it means the wolf pack.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. That the U-boats were like convoys and were really strong
    2. fast above water, medium when attacking, and slow when under water
    3. Diving and going silent
    4. That means who ever is spotted first is going to get shot first so they will most likely lose
    5. It means Wolf Pack, because the U-boats fight in groups

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1.Wolf Pack.
    2.slow: 4 to 6 know.Medium:7 to 9 knots.Fast:10 to 12 kots
3.to dive down in the water.
4.Because you have to see them and then shot and if you see him first you get the first shot off to hit them.
5.Because if your in a group you have more power.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. I thought the most interesting tactic was the Evasive tactic because it's cool how they can just hide underwater.
    2. The speeds were: Slow = 4 to 6 knots, medium = 7 to 9 knots, fast = 10 to 12 knots
    3. Once the concealment cover is blown the next best resource is to dive deep down.
    4. I think that means that whoever sees the other U-boat first has the better advantage over the other U-boat and probably has a better chance of winning.
    5. A Rudeltatik was a Wolf Pack tactic. I think it was an effective U-boat tactic because they could not find seperate isolated U-boats.

  20. 1:I like under water attacks because they half to do a lot of test and calculations and because it is a surprise attack.
    2:slow medium and fast
3:there second best tactic is to dive immediatly
4:i think it means who ever sees the enimy firts wins
5:it is when they attack convoys,it works because they stalk them and then at dawn they attack

4.I think that it means that if they are not spotted, then they can strike with suprise and win.

    2. slow = 4 to 6 knots, medium = 7 to 9 knots, fast = 10 to 12 knots.
    3. Dive immediately.
    4. If they see the enemy first its their fight to win.
    5. It is The Wolf Pack tactic. They do what ever most affective.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. The Wolf Pack Tactic because they have to go and find all of the convoys and then report back and the whole tactic is really effective.
    2. The slow speed was four to six knots and the medium was seven to nine knots and the fast speed was ten to twelve knots.
    3. They dive immediately and use the element of surprise.
    4. That if you are not seen and then see them first then you will win because then they have a clear shot and know where the enemy is.
    5. The Wolf Pack Tactic. Because it was the really affective and if one ship gets taken out then there are others to keep the war going.

  24. 1.The wolf pack tactic. Your U-boat gets to be escorted.
    2.slow-4-6 knots, medium-7-9 knots, fast10-12 knots.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. The Wolf Pack Tactic. you can team up on 1 ship and blow it up.
    2. Convoys can travel at slow, medium, or fast.
    3. Diving Immediately.
    4. Whoever sees the enemy ship first is prepared and will probably win the fight.
    5. It was a wolf pack tactic, and I think it was effective because there were lots of ships to help out.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. I think the Surfaced Torpedo Attacks was the most interesting because they work better at night and are hidden very well.
    2. Slow speed: 4 to 6 knots Medium: 7 to 9 knots and Fast: 10 to 12 knots
3.The next best resource is to dive immediately
4.I think that means that who ever sees the enemy first or whoever finds something first they will win the war or whatever they found.
    5. The Rudeltatik, also known as the Wolf Pack. It was an effective tactic because it had a strong and powerful impact on shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. I thought the idea of hiding down deep and waiting until they pass was the most interesting.
    2. they can go slow (6-8 knots), medium (8-10knots), and fast (10-12 knots).
    3. the best tactic then would be to dive immediately
    4. I think that means that if you see the enemy first, you can fire first and you wold win.
    5. It is the Wolf Pack tactic. its most effective because submarines cannot then attack single ships.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1. The wolf pack because it looks like it worked very well and you can do what you want to do.
    2. the three speeds are slow=4 to 6 knots, medium= 7 to 9 knots, and fast= 10 to 12 knots.
    3. to dive imedietly.
    4. I think that it means that when you see someone ans they don't see you, you can attack them first so you win.
    5. was to have a devastating impact on allied shipping.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1.The most tactic I found interesting was the Wolf Pack because they kind of got to do what they wanted and they sailed together as group.
2.A convoys speed travels at a speed as slow, medium, or fast.
    3.Dive right away.
4.I think it means that whoever sees somebody else then its there fight that thy need to win or fight against.
5.It is in the Wolf Pack tactic and the U-boat effected it because it allied shipping.

4.I think that it means that if they spot the enemy first they will always win.

    3. i think there next best resource is to dive fast
4.i think it means when you spot something good that you already have a chance of winning.
5.A rudeltatik is the wolf pack tactic.

  32. 1. I think the best tactic is the "Rudeltatik"because they could take down many ships at one time.

    2. They can travel at slow 4-6 knots, medium 7-9 knots, and fast 10-12 knots.

    3. If a U-Boats concealment is blown they should immediately dive.

    4. I think it means if you see your enemy first then you have more time to get out of the way or shoot at them; therefore you would win the "mini battle". But if they saw you first than they would have the upper hand and you would probably lose the "mini battle".

    5. A "Rudeltatik" is when many U-Boats travel together. Since this is basically what a convoy is it would work well because the U-Boats were able to get many ships down at one time.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. I like the evasive tactic where they hide underwater. It'd be like a adult only game of hide-and-seek!
    2. Slow: 4 to 6 knots, Medium: 7 to 9 knots, and Hard: 10 to 12 knots
    3. Dive underwater as quickly as possible and try not to be spotted.
    4. If you see something, you need to take action immediately so that you don't loose the opportunity to strike.
    5. The wolf pack tactic. The U-boats fought in groups. It's a 2 heads are better than 1 type of thing. The more power you have, the better you'll do.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1.The Wolf Pack tactic, because it is very interesting how u could do many different ways.
    2.Slow (4-6 knots), Medium (7-9 knots), Fast (10-12 knots).
3.The second best defense is to dive immediately.
4.I think it means that if you don't see the enemy first but they see you, they get the chance to kill you.
5.It is the Wolf Pack tactic. The boats all fought together so it is more efficient.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. I found interesting the tatic Submarine bubble target cool, because the people they fought against they could trick. They would shoot these canisters full of chemichals and launch them and they would create bubbles that would look like a submarine was emerging. 2. Slow =4 to 6 knots. Medium =7 to 9 knots. Fast = 10 to 12 knots. 3. It is for the people to dive immedieatly out of the submarine. 4. I think the meaning "He who sees first, has won" if you see a ship there is bound to be help around. If theres an explosion somewhere then there is bound to be a ship or a submarine somewhere. 5. It is where ships gather together in a group so it is harder for the other people to find easy targets.

  36. 1. My favorite tactic is remaining invisible. It is my favorite tactic because I think it is very hard to do and it would be fun because nobody could see me.
2.The speeds were slow, medium, and fast.
3.The next best resource is to dive.
4.I think it means when you see them first you can defeat them before they find you.
5.That is the wolf pack I think it was effective because if one goes down others can still fight.

1.The Wolf Pack tactic was smart because it was affective.
    2.Slow = 4 to 6 knots, medium = 7 to 9 knots, fast = 10 to 12 knots.
    3.Diving.
4.That if you saw them first you could have a better chance to win your battle.
    5. Wolf Pack, because there were a lot of people.

  38. 1. I thought that submerged attacks was the most interesting because I thought that it was cool how they had special ways to use the scope. (preferably quick peeks and with the sun behind them so the enemy has a glare.)
    2. The three speeds a convoy can travel at are: slow (4 to 6 knots), medium (7-9 knots), and fast (10-12 knots).
    3. After being spotted, the best recourse is to dive immediately. (and deep too.)
    4. I think that "He who sees first, has won!" means that if a U-boat is sighted, the enemy almost immediately wins. This is because the whole point of them is to stay concealed and launch surprise attacks. If this doesn't happen, there is no point in them.
    5. Rudeltatik, or Wolf Pack, is a tactic in which groups of ships were escorted by warships. I think that this was an effective tactic because it was not easy to shoot at them since it was such a large group and they were hard to take down.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1. I like it when they do under water attacks just because they have to do a lot of thinking and they have to do a lot of calculations.
    2. Slow = 4 to 6 knots Medium = 7 to 9 knots Fast = 10 to 12 knots
    3. The next best option is to dive.
    4. I think that who ever sees each other first has a better chance of hitting his enemy and that means the other people are going to probably have damages which makes them slower makes them even more possible to hit them and for them to surrender.
    5. Rudeltik means to most Germans devastating on allied shipping, because if it worked during World War 2 they are expecting the plan to work.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 1.I think the wolf pack tactic is the most interesting because they surround them and can do what is best at the moment.
    2.slow, medium, and fast.
    3.to dive right away.
4.I think it means if you see the other people first and know whats going on first then you are more likely to win.
5.the wolf pack tactic is what "rudeltatik" is. I think it was effective because because they had a powerful impact on shipping.

5.when ships sail together. With more people you will have a better plan.

  44. 1. The Wolf Pack. Because it's the most effective and the best one to have.
    2. slow medium and fast. slow=4 to 6 knots and medium=7 to 9 knots and fast=10 to 12 knots
    4. The first one you wins the land or the war has won the land.
    5. I think it is an effective thing because it will dominate anything.

  45. 1. I though Rudeltatik, the use of pack U-boats to suprise and confuse the enemy convoys.

    2. Slow=4-6 knots, Medium=7-9 knots, Fast=10-12 knots

    3. The next best tactic is to dive and try and get concealed again.

    4. That who's ever concealment is broken first, is who gets attacked first, and whoever gets attacked first normally loses.

    5. A Rudeltatik is a wolf pack of U-boats and that's the tactic to confused and destroy.

  46. 1) The thing I found Interesting is that the U-b are harder to kill.

2.) slow is 4-6 knots, medium is 7-9 knots, and fast is 10-12 knots, those are the three speeds convoys travel.

3.) The 2nd best tactic is submerged attacts because they are supprise attacts.

    4.)

    ReplyDelete
  48. 1.Surfaced Torpedo Attacks, I thought that it was the best way of attacking because they could go faster, they wouldn't get detected by sonar, and they could penetrate the enemy's boundaries.
2.They can travel slow (which is 4 to 6 knots), medium (which is 7 to 9 knots), and fast (which is 10 to 12 knots.)
    3.It is to dive immediately.
4.I think that it means that if you've been spotted it's too late, so be the one to spot and not to be spotted.
5.It's when they got a group of U-boats together and then waiting to make mass destruction. It was effective because there wasn't just one submarine, so they had a better chance of taking the enemy because different subs were doing different jobs.

    4) I think it means if the escort sees you first your dead or if you see the escort first the escort is dead.
    5) It is the wolf pack tactic. I think it was effective because instead of taking orders they can do what ever they want.

  52. 1. I thought that the most interesting tactic was Wolf Pack because it was most unsuspecting and it was very cool to learn about.
    2.slow=4-6 knots, medium= 7-9 knots, fast= 10-12 knots
    3. the next best thing to o if your cover was blown was to dive under as fast as you can.
    4. What I think the phrase "he who sees first, has won" means that, if you spot the enemy first then you have a bigger chance of winning the battle.
    5. the "Rudeltatik" is the Wolf Pack, I think its a good tactic because no one sees it coming.

    2. Slow (4 to 6 knots), Medium (7 to 9 knots), Fast (10 to 12).

    3. Dive into the water as soon as possible.

    4. The 1st one who has won the war, gets/owns the land.

    5. It was also called the "Wolf Pack". And it had an impact on allied shipping.

  57. 1. Wolf pack tactic because it's very simple but once you get the right away attack.
    2.4 to 6 knots,7 to 9 knots,10 to 12 knots.
3.To just dive down below the water surface.
4.That if the U-boats see the British first they can the stealth.
5.It's a group of U-boats that attack convoys and attack how ever.

  58. 1.I thought the U-boat surfaced torpedo attack was most interesting to me because the U-boats can go a lot faster on top of the water and attack faster.
    2.slow, medium,and fast
3.the one that sees the enemy first and shoots him first wins.this one is for #4
4.this one is #3. The next resouce is to dive immediately
    5. It was a devastating impact on allied ships because the enemies would not be able to find an easy target.

  59. 1. I liked the convoy system a lot because if you cut off other countries allies supplies then they don't have anything to use to battle the other countries with, they would starve.
    2. Slow (4 to 6 knots), medium (7 to 9 knots), fast (10 to 12 knots).
    3. To dive immediately.
4 I think that it means that if you were seen first then you probably didn't see them in time and they would be able to hurt your U-boat.
    5. I think that it was a good tactic because if you defeat the convoys system then you're allies don't get their supplies cut off.

  60. 1)The Wolf Pack one because I thought that t was cool why they actually called the "Rudeltatik"

    2)slow = 4 to 6 knots, medium = 7 to 9 knots, fast = 10 to 12 knots.

    3)They should immediately dive.
4)Maybe because they saw it first so it is theirs so they won.
5)They used it because of the Allied shipping and so that is why they called it the Wolf Pack.

4)whoever spots the enemy first wins
5)a pack of U-Boats to cause more destruction

  63. 1. The tactic that I found most interesting was the one where they attacked at night and went straight up to the middle of the boats and shot torpedoes. It's the most interesting because the other boats don't even see the u-boats coming and get taken down.
    2. The 3 speeds the convoy's can travel are slow, medium and fast.
    3. The next best recourse is to dive immediately.
    4. I think that it means that the boat that sees the other boat first has won because they saw them first and had a bigger chance to shoot.
    5. Rudeltatik is the Wolf Pack. I think it was an effective u-boat tactic because the submarine that was the shadower told the other u-boats the enemy u-boats position so they could be ready to attack the enemy with surprise.

  64. 1. Surfaced Tarpedo because they can sometimes go faster than the convoys.
    2. Slow:4-6 knots Medium:7-9 knots Fast: 10-12 knots
    3. Jump into the water
    4. The person who was in it first knows the most

  65. 1.A u-boats can outrun escorts, including corvettes, but not modern destroyers
    2.Slow, medium, or fast.
3.Then your next best option is to dive immediately.
4.That they were the first person to see whatever and so they win.
5.Wolf pack, because they were a lot more ships and soldiers to fight the just a couple boats going.

  66. 1. I think the most interesting tactic is Rudeltaktik. I think it is most interesting because U-boats are lightly armored, but with Rudeltaktik the U-boats are in packs so they make up for their light weaponry by staying in groups.
    2. Slow 4-6 knots, medium 7-9 knots, and fast 10-12 knots.
    3. The best next thing is to dive.
    4. I think that means whoever has the element of surprise has a great advantage.
    5. It is when U-boats attack in a group. I think it was successful because U-boats are great at staying hidden so when there are a lot of U-boats surprise attacking at the same time the results are destructive.

  67. 1. submerged, because they get to use there best weapon torpedoes
    2. slow 4-6 knots medium 7-9 knots 10-12 knots
    3. to dive immediately
    4. i think it means if the enemies see you first they are going to kill you but if you see them first you will kill them
    5. because they had one of their own men following the ships so they know where they are

    2. 4 to 6 knots 7 to 9 knots and 10 to 12 knots.
    3. To dive down immediately.
    4. The first person to see the other boat will be able to get into better position to fight the other boat.
    5. To confuse the other boat.

  69. 1. I think that all of them are interesting because they are all different ways to fight and defeat the other team.
    2. slow/4-6 knots,medium/7-9 knots,fast/10-12 knots.
    3. To dive.
    4. That if you see the other team before they see you then you have an advantage to defeat them.
    5. All the boats come together and that will make it more challenging to be defeated.

  70. 1. I think the best tactic is the wolf pack tactic, because it gives supplies to there allies with out there enemies knowing.
    2. The three speeds are slow = 2 to 4 knots, medium = 7 to 9 knots, and fast = 10 to 12 knots.
    3. The next best defense in to dive immediately.
    4. I think it means that if you get done first wins.
    5. The Rudeltaktik is to have devastating to allied shipping. I think it works because there allies need supplies to and this u-boat can give it to them.

5.Because with more ships you have a bigger chance of wining.

4)because you had to aim and it took a while.
