Literary Concepts - Theme
The theme of a literary work is an insight about life or human nature that the writer presents to the reader.  In "Across Five Aprils" Irene Hunt offers some of her ideas about inflexible beliefs, about war, and about hardship.  Below are several thematic statements.  After reading them, give examples from the novel, the Civil War, and life today that illustrate those themes.
1.  Individual loyalties can conflict with the values and loyalties of a community.
2.  Most often there are no real winners in a war; both sides suffer.
3.  Some decisions in life are difficult because they are not clearly right or wrong.
4.  Our lives are affected by circumstances beyond our control.
5.  Hardship and the challenge to one's beliefs offer the opportunity for growth.
6.  Justice does not always proceed according to human timetables or individual ideas of right and wrong.

    1. AFA: When Jethro had to go to Newton, he was confronted by Guy Wortman and was getting yelled at because of Bill being a Copperhead.
CW: When the South wanted State's rights and the North said no they went to war about it.
LT: When there are many different religions or cultures in a vicinity that could cause chaos. EX: Muslims and Christians living in the same city with different beliefs.
    2. AFA: When Tom dies there is much despair in the Creighton family and the war goes nowhere after that. They wanted the war to end at that time.
CW: Men were just fighting over a simple cause and there are many uncalled for casualties.
LT: Even if there is a giant cause, we never get nowhere because right after we are done, we just go back to fighting after that.
    3. AFA: The decision for Bill to the Confederate side was a bad thing for the Creighton family because they got their barn burned down and Guy Wortman almost killed Jethro on the way back from Newton.
CW: The decision to secede was a bad idea for the South because they had less people down there and they also had less supplies so it was unnecessary to secede.
LT: The decision to either live in a house that is rented for less money but over time spend a lot or to buy a brand new house and only pay for the house once will make for a hard choice.
    4. AFA: When Jethro had to work the fields by himself and the team of horses because of Matt's older age not making him work and Ellen working inside the house with Jenny except for when Jenny left to see Shadrach in Washington D.C.
CW: Ween you turned 18 and your number was pulled to go to war and you couldn't control it unless you had $300 to pay for a substitute.
LT: When the government passes a law that you don't like or understand you just have to learn to deal with it.
    5. AFA: When Jethro had to drive the team to Newton, people had many different beliefs for why Bill went to the Confederacy and if he was the one that killed Tom.
CW: When the people in the SOuth thought that secession and slavery was the right thing. They were wrong because they lost the war.
LT: If we believe that the war was created god, the scientists would have their own argument about who or what created the war.
    6. AFA: When Tom was killed, the person who killed him thought that justice had been served, but they didn't have sympathy for the Creighton's.
CW: When the Civil War ended at Appomattox, justice was served between the North and the South.
LT: Many court cases people don't believe they were right and justice was served.

  5. 1.AFA:Bill wanted to go and fight for the South, while a lot of people in town wanted to go to war for the north. This caused fights.
CW: Two friends may be split from their beliefs in war because they root for different things or news paper polls or gossip about the war etc. etc.
LT:There's a group of people working on a project together and one person really wants to have something done to the project but the rest of the people disagree.
2.AFA: All the older brothers went out for war so Jethro, first as a boy, had to go out and work in the fields. While his brother died and Shad got sick.
CW: Men who were once friends would apply for a different side for war and they might even kill each other.
LT: When two friends get in a fight and tell each other they don't like them, they're both probably sad because they might've had really good times before the fight and they'd probably miss each other.
3.AFA:In the Creighton family, Ellen, Matt, Tom, Bill, Eb, and Jenny had different views about the war, but Jethro thought all the decisions were right because they were reasonable opinions.
CW: Men would have to leave his family and friends and choose for himself what side he will fight for not depending on other soldiers thoughts or opinions.

CW: The men who turn 18 cannot control the choice if they go to war or not because it's like a big raffle and if they get chosen they didn't control it.
LT:People can talk about other people if they want, but you can't control it, unless you go to an adult and tell them about it but it would still be beyond your control.

LT: When people ask you hard things you have to name all the pro's and con's and choose what would be the best situation for them or you. This happens in education when you have to choose the best answer or food when you have to choose the perfect meal etc. etc.
6.AFA: Bill and John talked about what was happening during the war even though they were on different sides and Bill probably disagreed about everything in his mind, but he never said anything out loud.
CW: Maybe generals set up the battle plan and maybe other generals on the reverse side found their plans and went in a way they could sneak up on them and attack and have a victory.
LT: Some court cases don't go the way the offender wanted it to because the jury and judge decides the final say.

  6. 1. for this one in Across Five Aprils. Bill left for the war and every one blame the Creightons for it.
Civil War: one solders loyalty might belong for the Union wile the community might be for the Confederets.
Life Today: people might want to have a sale in the store and other people might not.
    2. Across Five Aprils: the war was over and won. but Jethro would never get to see his brother Tom, of Bill again.
Civil War: lives were lost on both sides and they lost a lot of men on both sides so no one realy wins.
Life Today: today there are people still fighting and might not even get to see there family again.
    3. Across Five Aprils: when Jethro sent the letter to the president about Eb.
Civil War: fighting in the war was not right or wrong. You could get your way out of it and help around the town or you could fight for you town.
Life Today: some decisions are hard to day because you friend might be doing a thing and your other friend might be doing a different thing.
    5. Across Five Aprils: every day the Creightons worked around the farm and soon the barn was built back up and the water was clean.
Civil War: they keep on coming back and if you work hard you will just might win.
Life Today: People go to collage and they work hard on what they want to be when they grow up.
    4. across Five Aprils: The war effected the creightons because they had people die in the battle.
Civil War:like depending on the circumstances they could loss they lives.
Life Today: like. you might get stuck in a problem. but then you get it and get out and when the same one comes around you wont get stuck.
    6. Across Five Aprils: They one the war, but that doesnt mean they did the right thing
Civil War: They could have one the war, but have people disagreeing if it was right.
Life Today: a girl might get her stuff back, but the other person gets in trouble and they are your friend.

  7. 4.Across Five Aprils: When Matt Creighton had a heart attack nobody could control that. In the book.
Civil War: From a Northerners point of view they can't control if the Southerners attack or if the Confederates shoot one of their commanders.
Life Today: Our lives are affected by death. Nobody in the whole world can prevent death. Everybody eventually dies. You can control in some way, shape, or form when you die or possibly how you die. You can control if you commit suicide and you can control your health so you can live longer. If their is a death in your family or you know of a close friend you start to realize that you need to appreciate what you have. Also death's cause depression and make people do crazy things
    5. Across Five Aprils: When Eb decided to desert, he felt very disappointed in himself. He realized that being a man meant going back and facing his fears. Because he broke down and because he felt that he made the wrong decision he grew stronger from that and went back. Next time he might not break down or next time he might face his fears right away and not look back.
Civil War: I believe that every single soldier from any war that survives has a lot of personal growth. Before they went into the war they didn't really know what to expect. Some people thought it wouldn't last long and that it was going to be easy. Soldiers personal growth comes from them seeing their friends die, or seeing the harsh conditions, or even from killing somebody. Once the war was over there emotional and mental state were very different.
Life Today: When a student fails a homework assignment or a test they learn there mistakes a lot easier by seeing what they did wrong. Next time they have a test they would now better on how to prepare themselves so they wouldn't fail next time.
    6. Across Five Aprils: In the book, the soldiers who deserted and were found were punished and would have to be brought back. Individual people who don't fight in the war and soldiers who desert believe that they shouldn't be punished.
Civil War: The main thing that caused the Civil War was the way the South treated slaves. The justice system said nothing that anybody couldn't have slaves but individuals, especially in the North, believed that people in the South shouldn't do that to human beings, no matter what their skin color.
Life Today: The justice system says that kids have to go to school until their 16 (?). A lot of kids and teenagers don't like school and they believe that going and getting an education should be a choice not a law.

  8. 1.
AFA: Bill believes that he should fight for the South. The rest of the community is mostly for the North and disagree with Bill.
CW: President Lincoln wanted to give mercy to the South. The North however, wanted to take revenge out on the South.
LT:Today, a lot of people do not believe in a lot of things i do. This can cause a problem in school and other things I do. For one example, I do not agree with dating at this age. Most kids at this school would or do date.

    2.
AFA: The North won the Civil War. Jethro's family supported the North. Though Jethro was happy the war was over and it seemed the North won, many men would not return to their homes. To Jethro, he was saddened by the lost of his brothers.
CW: As I said previously, many people died in the war and did not return home. Though the North won, many died and to their familys, they only saw lost.
LT: Today, the U.S. has fought many battles. One example would be Vietnam. Though Vietnam won, many were devastated and lost family and friend
    3.
AFA:Jethro's brother Bill made a difficult decision. He could fight against two different slaverys. One seemed no better than the other. Neither seemed right or wrong.
CW:President Lincoln had to make a difficult decision. He could free the slaves or not. Both had consequences. Many people wanted one thing, and many wanted the other.
LT: In voting, many are pressured on who to vote for by the influence of others. Sometimes none of the canidates seem good and sometimes none seem good.
    4.
AFA:Jethro could not stop his brother from dying. His brother had his own will and Jethro could not speak against it.
CW:Many wanted the Civil War to end. Almost no one had the control to stop it.
LT:Death is a big one. When a parent of loved one dies, it is almost always out of our control. A normal person would not want their parent to die and it can not be controlled.
    5.
AFA:Jethro was a young kid when the war started. He was naive to it and did not know what was right. After the war, his eyes were opened to what war really was.
CW: In the Civil War, many wanted the war. After the war many were horrified by it and didnt want any more of it.
LT: Today when we make mistakes, we can learn from it. One example is when you eat A LOT of cheese. After you would know not to do that again.
    6.
AFA: Jethro thought that the Burdows were wrong for their actions. Many wanted them to pay, but they were protected and got mercy.
CW:The North thought the South should pay for all they did. Lincoln however, gave them grace and let them live and rebuild.
LT: Today, crime cases are a big thing. Sometimes the person everyone thought should get punished, gets to get off free.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1. Across Five Aprils: Everybody in southern Illinois, in Jethro's town, favor the Union and when Bill decides to go fight for the Confederates, his individual opinions clash with the town and community.
Civil War: Some commanders might not agree with the plan of attack that their boss' want them to pursue. Some soldiers didn't agree with the plan of attack either and that caused conflict with what the other majority of conflicts agreed to.
Life Today: When cliques decide to choose to let someone into the group there might be one person that doesn't agree and that can start drama.
2.Across Five Aprils: For Matt's family he is torn because he has family members like Tom, Eb, and Shadrach that are fighting for the North but then he has another son that is fighting for the South. One side has to win the war and either way one of his sons could die and at least one of them is going to lose.
Civil War: Obviously in any war, both sides are going to suffer casualties. The North won the war, by definition, but I am pretty sure that they lost more soldiers because they had more soldiers fighting. The South lost the war and they lost a great number of soldiers. Both sides suffered in casualties, disease, wounded soldiers, supplies, etc.
Life Today: In a court case for murder, if the suspect is found guilty, obviously the offender is "lost" because he is going to jail. The offenders defense attorney "lost" too. The people who are prosecuting the offender would be happy the offender is going to jail. But they would also lose because they lost someone who was close to their heart.
3.Across Five Aprils: It was a difficult decision for Jethro to write the letter to President Lincoln. He knew that if he sent the letter Mr. Lincoln might be upset about a deserter or he might understand where Jethro was coming from. Jethro didn't know what the outcome could be so he couldn't decide.
Civil War: Using the view point of General Robert E. Lee, deciding to surrender to the Union was a decision that could end up being right or wrong. He could have continued to fight the war and not give up or he could stop and save the grieving battles. Both of them could be right but Lee decided to surrender.
Life Today: Choosing to have an abortion is a decision that can be write or wrong. Under some circumstances, whether you're too young or for other reasons, it could be considered right to have an abortion. But it could also be wrong because in some way, shape, or form it could be considered murder for eliminating a baby. Hard decision that is very unclear to many people around the world.

  10. 1. AFA: Bill Creighton made a decision to join the Confederacy and everyone in the neighborhood disliked his decision since he lived in a Union state.
CW: The South strongly believes that there should be slavery but the North disagrees.
LT: People in general think differently than others. A small group of people could say that smoking is good and then a large body of students and adults would say that it's disgusting and it shortens your life.
    2. AFA: Many families, no matter where they live, suffer the loss of their dad, husband, or brother just like the Creightons.
CW: The Union might have won the war but they suffered greatly because they lost a lot of men and supplies.
LT: It's just like the Civil War except today, we are fighting across the seas and oceans and losing soldiers.
    3. AFA: When Bill Creighton chose to fight, he wasn't sure what side he would choose but it didn't really matter to him.
CW: Some decisions Lincoln made were difficult but many people disagreed with him a lot of the time but look what he has accomplished.
LT: You can decide what you would like to eat today, but there are so many choices, but it doesn't matter which meal you eat because you won't be hungry afterward.
    4. AFA: You can't control your own family from going into the war when the have too.
CW: Many people were picked to go to war just like lottery numbers and they couldn't control that.
LT: School is mandatory for kids who can attend it.
    5. AFA: The Creightons lost a son and suffered, but they didn't break down and do nothing; they kept going.
CW: The Union army lost a lot of battles but that didn't keep them from moving on.
LT: We, as students, can get bad grades but we learn from them. We learn that we have to study and do our homework.

  11. 3. When Jethro goes to Shad's house to see if Bill was right about the war there was no right or wrong answer about his opinion.
In the Civil War different battles were going after different things if they killed a certain person they still had to deal with something else so they have there pros and cons.
In life deciding what you want to be when you grow up is hard because you want your job to have good money but it might not have good insurance for your family.
    4. When Shad and Jenny wanted to be together Jenny's parents wouldn't allow it because Shad was way older so they couldn't be together because of her parents.
In Civil War what the head leader decides and the soldiers don't like it they cant do anything about it.
In a life situation if your parents say you can't do something you can't control that but if you do there would probably be punishment.
    2. When Bill was saying his opinions in war and Shad was saying his both people suffer because they dont know what is going to happen.
Civil War is when both sides lose something that helps them a lot then they both suffer.
In life when two people get in a fight and they don't talk it out they both are suffering because they are both upset at themselves and each other.
    1. When Jethro does a lot for the community but also for himself.
In the Civil War when the Battle leaders take on for there country and lead on what they have to do to get more land.
In life today when someone values something and is very loyal about the situation.

  12. Question 1) AFA: When Jethro's older brother Bill wanted to be a Confederate Solider, and the community didn't like that. So Bill was being loyal to the Confederate's but the community was being loyal to themselves and agreed that they were right about Bill. So they disagreed with Bill's decision and drew the toll on the Crieghton family instead of Bill.
CW: Abraham Lincoln had disagreements with the the community that didn't believe in the laws that he was creating and freedoms that he was giving to blacks.
LT: Solider that are from one country that is fighting in the war, but that soldier doesn't like what they are fighting for so he leave to become a solider in another country to fight for what he believes in.

Question 2) AFA: Even though the Union won the war they lost a lot of soldiers including Tom Crieghton. The confederates also lost a lot of soldier in the war. So both sides suffered.
CW: When 2 sides are fighting it's like the same situation in AFA. Both sides lose soldiers but one side offically wins the war.
LT: In sports both sides play really hard to do their best. But in the end one team pulls out to win but both teams suffer from being Physically drained

Question 3) AFA: Tom and Bill and Shad's decision to go to war was not right or wrong. They did what was right in their minds for there country
